I'm still seething about that Will Jacks dismissal so going to hand over to Elizabeth Botcherby, who will take you through to the close.

    Grrr.

  2. Eng 233-5published at 57 overs

Michael Neser lands slightly awkwardly after falling over in his follow through from his first delivery of the over but he dusts himself down and is able to continue.

Neser hits Jamie Smith on the pad with a nip-backer but the England batter got a healthy chunk of inside edge on it.

Some rather laboured Scott Boland fielding at mid-on affords Smith a single.

There is not a whole lot of batting left for England. It will be hard for Ben Stokes to even get singles if he comes out - a muscle strain makes it tricky.

  4. Eng 232-5published at 56 overs

Not particularly convincing from Jame Smith who almost chops on to Beau Webster backing away to leg.

Later in the over, Smith uses his feet well to get to the pitch and work Webster into the leg side for a single.

Ben Stokes is up and about in his whites shadow batting. Looks like he will be the next man in.

Jacob Bethell brings up an exceptional debut century at 22 years, two months and 73 days. In the last 50 years in Tests for England, the only other players to score their debut century younger than Bethell were Alastair Cook, David Gower and Ollie Pope.

  6. Eng 228-5published at 55 overs

    Michael Neser replaces Mitchell Starc.

Jacob Bethell is extremely composed, though. Picks up a couple with a punch through the covers before a leg-bye at the end of the over helps him keep the strike.

Jacob Bethell needs to be the one to reset now. Time for him to switch on and re-build with his partner Jamie Smith.

  8. Eng 225-5published at 54 overs

Beau Webster is turning a few but there's some pies in there as well.

Jamie Smith is quickly on a long hop and waspishly cuts him to the boundary for four.

Later in the over he awkwardly defends one which grips.

Our baby son was born at the beginning of this fifth Test. We still can't agree on a name, so I've obviously been looking to the cricket for inspiration... I think I'll suggest Jacob when my wife wakes up.

    Jacobine (@3:22), meet Jacob.

    • Mike Atherton at 22y 76d v New Zealand - 1990

Jamie Smith the new batter. He will have learned his lesson from the other day, you would have hoped.

Mtichell Starc with a tight over. Just one run from the bat of Jacob Bethell from it.

Someone will defend that Will Jacks wicket and say he was trying to take the game on and put some pressure on the bowler.

    Give me a break.

  13. Eng 220-5published at 52 overs

Absolutely flabbergasted by that from Will Jacks. He's just watched England bat patiently and get their rewards.

He himself has batted patiently in previous matches.

    Then that.

I have seen some stupidity in this Ashes series and that is up there.

Will Jacks tried to hit to mid-wicket but picked out the only fielder out there. Just when England are going well, they do something stupid.

Will Jacks slogged that. A mighty fine catch from Cameron Green.

A very ordinary dismissal. This is where the game is lost for England.

    Jacks c Green b Webster 0 (Eng 219-5)

What on earth has Will Jacks been watching for the past few hours?

    It's certainly not this game.

This is almost as bad as that Jamie Smith dismissal the other day.

A horrible slash across the line at one of Beau Webster's part-time off-breaks and Cameron Green takes a catch tumbling forward in the deep.

    Utterly brainless.

Bringing a spinner in changed things for Australia. Harry Brook looked a bit cravenly in how he played the shot.

It is so important to have a spinner in your side.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 51.1 overs

    Brook lbw b Webster 42 (Eng 219-4)

    Eesh. Not ideal for England.

Harry Brook is hit on the back leg deep in his crease by Beau Webster's part-time off-spin.

It does look high but the ball-tracking technology has it clattering into the top of leg stump. Brook was given not out on the field, but that has been overturned.

Another one of those curious chaotic periods for Brook, which results in his departure.

Was the ball bouncing too much? Height may be an issue.
