    Thanks, Elizabeth.

Mince pies and limoncello panettone have long been demolished, I'm afraid. Into breakfast-type fodder now. Had some porridge. Bagel for later.

I've just been looking up maiden first-class hundreds made in a Test match. Hopefully that does not jinx Jacob Bethell.

I'm going to disappear for a bit. Here's Timothy Abraham.

Status update on the mince pie and limoncello panettone, Tim?

    Very impressive from England.

Jacob Bethell is proving what he can do. England have not collapsed in a heap like we expected and we are looking to go into a day five.

Harry Brook will be key for England after tea. There will be a lot of talk on him and whether he can get a century in Australia.

He is such a pivotal player and this track suits batting.

  4. Tea - Eng 174-3, trail by nine runspublished at 41 overs

    Bethell 79 (132), Brook 24 (22)

Well, well, despite losing Ben Duckett early in the session, England have made it to tea in a promising position.

Jacob Bethell has built a steady 79 (132). Harry Brook, who has just creamed Beau Webster through point for four to finish the session on a high, is unbeaten on 24 (22), albeit with a few scares along the way.

England trail by nine runs with seven wickets in hand.

Australia will know that this is a key partnership to break.

England have been fragile in the middle order but it is such a good surface to bat on once you are in.

  6. Eng 168-3published at 40 overs

Harry Brook defends Travis Head's first delivery and then skips down to the second to hammer it through the covers for four.

Two balls later, he narrowly avoids losing his wicket two minutes before tea, bottom-edging a short delivery and using his foot to keep it away from the stumps.

That's not the first time he's ridden his luck.

Australia are in control of this game but it is probably not what they expected from this England defence. They are used to getting England five down fairly quickly.

What will happen to Australia's body language in the next hour or so?

  8. Eng 160-3published at 39 overs

Beau Webster, bowling with Alex Carey stood up to the stumps, concedes two singles.

All the bowling changes! Here comes Travis Head to huge applause.

Jacob Bethell has been spotted as the next generational talent. His ability to go through the gears and change formats so easily is what is so impressive.

  11. Eng 158-3published at 38 overs

Jacob Bethell has a Test (and first-class) high score of 96. With a single off Michael Neser, he moves onto 75 (123).

Steve Smith introduces Beau Webster into the attack. There's a lot of staring and pointing as Webster and Mitchell Starc try and locate the top of his mark.

This is a test of Harry Brook's patience. He will have that devil on his shoulder saying 'smack it into the crowd.'

He will want to do that but this is not the time.

  13. Eng 157-3published at 37 overs

Oooh you don't see that very often. Alex Carey tries to take a climbing delivery from Cameron Green in front of his face and it pings off the top of his fingers and into the helmet behind him on the floor. Five penalty runs.

Harry Brook gets away with one off the final delivery of the over, top-edging for four over the wicketkeeper. A little bit of caution might be wise, Harry?

Still, a profitable over for England. 14 from it.

On a tough pitch today, Jacob Bethell has played exceptionally well to register his fourth Test fifty. He's cashed in when offered width or they've drifted down leg and driven well when it's been pitched up, defended most deliveries in the channel, and looked to score singles when they've bowled straighter lines - a very mature innings so far.

  15. Eng 143-3published at 36 overs

Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell rotate the strike to knock another six runs off Australia's lead.

    Bethell is into the 70s.

It seems like an uphill task for England still. Can Harry Brook get his head down and produce a substantial innings?

It is nice to see Jacob Bethell showing his talent. He has just got it and it is good to see him showing that.

  18. Eng 137-3published at 35 overs

Cameron Green has not had a good outing with the ball at the SCG. His spells noticeably release the pressure on England's batters.

Back-to-back boundaries for Jacob Bethell, including a pleasing whipped four through mid-on. He's looking comfortable.

    England trail by 46 runs.

The pitch conditions today have by far been the toughest conditions to bat in this Test - uneven bounce, seam movement off the pitch - it's just not been easy.

    PitchViz rating:

    • Day 1 - 4.5
    • Day 2 - 5.8
    • Day 3 - 6.0
    • Day 4 - 8.4

Across this Ashes series, only on day two (9.1) & day one (8.7) of the MCG Test had a higher PitchViz rating compared to the conditions today.

Jacob Bethell has played a really steady, responsible innings. That is what playing at number three is all about.

Very promising indeed - he has shown a really good temperament.
