  1. 'It's ebbed and flowed nicely'published at 18:27 BST 3 April

    Northants v Lancs 341-7

    Scott Read
    BBC Radio Manchester Sport

It's been an absorbing final session as Lancashire attacked with the older ball and Northamptonshire struck back with the new ball.

Lancashire were 289-4 when Northamptonshire took the second new ball, with Michael Jones and Matty Hurst sharing an excellent half century partnership, scoring at a good tempo.

However, its been a different challenge when its Harry Conway and Ben Sanderson bowling with the new one. Under the lights its been tricky.

The day has ebbed and flowed nicely, its looks a decent pitch and Lancashire have runs on the board already, and an attack led by James Anderson.

Let's hope the second day is just as enthralling.

  2. Close of play at Derbypublished at 18:26 BST 3 April

    Derbyshire 391-4 v Worcestershire

Day one belongs to Derbyshire who came close to scoring 400 in the day after being asked to bat by Worcestershire.

Openers Harry Came and Caleb Jewell both pisted 50s, but the real damage was done by Martin Andersson, who hit a six and 17 fours in an unbeaten 134.

He has so far added 210 for the fifth wicket with Luis Reece, who has contributed 89 so far and they will be looking to push on to a maximum batting points haul on day two.

    Fisher lbw b Thompson 0 (Warwickshire v Surrey 328-9)

Great stuff from Jordan Thompson who gets one to nip back at Matt Fisher and pins him in front for no score.

Warwickshire have eight balls left to try and get James Taylor (or Ben Foakes) out and end the day on a real high.

  4. Close of play at Leicesterpublished at 18:23 BST 3 April

    Leicestershire 15-1 v Sussex 361

Tom Scriven does the job required of him by seeing out Fynn Hudson-Prentice's final over of the day at Grace Road.

Despite some pre-match weather worries, we have got through an entire day's play with Tom Clark making 101 off 164 balls in the Sussex first innings.

Having been 154-2 at lunch, Sussex may feel they are a few runs short, but how good a total they managed will only become clear as day two goes on.

Jake Weatherald will resume on four not out for Leicestershire, and Scriven has five against his name.

  5. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:22 BST 3 April

    Abbott c Smith b Thompson 40 (Warwicks v Surrey 328-8)

The 108 run stand is broken.

Sean Abbott swipes at a rising one from Jordan Thompson and gets a top-edge through to Kai Smith behind the stumps.

That's a first Bears wicket for Thompson on debut.

Matt Fisher joins Ben Foakes in the middle.

Two wickets left and 11 balls remain in the day.

  6. Postpublished at 18:19 BST 3 April

    Warwicks v Surrey 328-7

Surrey have slowed the pace a little and seem content to come back in the morning to pick up that third batting point.

Ben Foakes shows more sublime timing to crack Nathan Gilchrist through mid-wicket for his 21st four to move to 128*.

The seamer gets a modicum of revenge by thudding him on the thigh from the next ball.

Two overs remain in an extraordinary day.

  7. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:17 BST 3 April

    Patel c Simpson b Robinson 4 (Leics 10-1 v Sussex 361)

Perhaps a rash shot by Rishi Patel in the circumstances.

He tries to cut a wide one from Ollie Robinson whi8ch climbs a little higher than he was expecting and edges through to the keeper.

Tom Scriven comes out as nightwatch.

  8. Close of play at Lord'spublished at 18:16 BST 3 April

    Middlesex 279-5 v Gloucestershire

Middlesex managed to get past 200 on day one of the season mainly thanks to Leus du Plooy.

He finishes on 98 not out with bad light curtailing his efforts to get to an opening match century on the first day of the season.

Earlier Sam Robson and Max Holden both made it into the 30s, Will Williams ending things for both on his competitive Glos debut.

Ryan Higgins, a fantasy cricket favourite, had a rare failure with just five before falling to Aussie seamer Gabe Bell.

Next in the order was wicketkeeper Joe Cracknell who is 58 not out.

Middlesex's first day, Glos with work to do.

  9. Close of play at Southamptonpublished at 18:15 BST 3 April

    Hants v Essex 219-3

Rain and now bad light has seen stumps drawn early at the Utilita Bowl and Hampshire have a bit of thinking to do after a day their visitors have bossed.

It looked like Hants had made the better start with Essex 27-2 and with Tom Westley retired hurt after he was rapped on the glove but Essex have rolled back into this.

Matt Critchley finishes on 97 not out with Charlie Allison unbeaten on 60. Their partnership is 152 nad counting.

Hampshire were passive with their field settings and lacked invention with the old ball which is something that Essex may well replicate but until then it is Westley's side who are in front.

It is a day that provided a trivia answer with the Essex skipper beccoming the first subbed player, replaced by Noah Thain who can bat in both innings but not bowl.

    Leics 10-0 v Sussex 361

Jake Weatherald's previous experience of English conditions was gleaned in club cricket in Yorkshire and East Anglia.

Now he is back at county level as a full-ledged Test player and he strokes a no-ball from Fynn Hudson-Prentice through the covers for the first four of his innings.

    Crawley lbw b Potts 9 (Durham 335 v Kent 22-2)

Matty Potts wins the battle with Zak Crawley.

It's a great ball in fairness, shaping into the right hander, who plays across it and is thumped low on the shin infront of middle and leg.

Durham are cock-a-hoop. Kent are wobbling.

Zak Crawley and Ben McKinney have both departed cheaply today.

    Let the discourse commence...

Tawanda Muyeye joins Sam Northeast in the middle, just trying to make it through to stumps at this point.

    Glamorgan 73-4 v Yorks

Logan van Beek starts a new spell and is convinced Ben Kellaway got a nick to his first delivery. The umpire says he didn't - and that's exactly what Glamorgan fans want to see/hear.

  13. Postpublished at 18:11 BST 3 April

    Durham 335 v Kent 22-1

Matty Potts bowling to Zak Crawley. Get the popcorn.

Glorious cover drive from Crawley for his second boundary.

  14. Close at Tauntonpublished at 18:09 BST 3 April

    Somerset 292-6 v Notts

What a first day for Somerset against the Champions.

The forecast wrote off the day for most of this week, so what a phenomenal effort from Nick Pepper's groundstaff team and to credit Graham Lloyd and Paul Pollard for letting play crack on from 11am after more morning rain during the warm ups.

The highlight of today was another Tom Abell hundred, his fourth v Notts and his partnership with James Rew (64) looked like it may endanger their massive record at Trent Bridge in July last year, that was v the kookaburra ball it should be said.

Rew fell to a phenomenal Kyle Verreyne catch, grabbing the sweep onto the boot one handed in front of the wicket.

Honourable mention for Josh Thomas, starting just his second Championship game, getting 40 at the top.

Notts produced 89 play and misses across the day, but a couple of poor drops did not help the toiling bowlers, of whom Olly Stone, Dillon Penningtonn and Rob Lord looked particularly impressive.

This is a tremendous innings from Foakes that is going to fuel the debate of whether he should be in the England squad given his duel ability as a keeper and as a batter

    Joel, Lisburn

Lovely to see Foakes doing well again for Surrey. The break from England is surely helping now?

    Jun, Cambridge

Ben Foakes is a class act..treated badly by England. Can score runs in all situations and he is the best wicketkeeper in the country.

    Chris, Godstone

Absolute class from Ben Foakes. Classy, well paced and no stupid shots. It’s almost as if he doesn’t want to be picked to play for England!

    Peter, London

Cmon BEN FOAKES. Leading from the front. Only Surrey player to show a bit of backbone, get him in instead of Smith we already know he’s better with the gloves and now we know he’s better with the bat as well.

    James, London

  16. Kent lose early wicketpublished at 18:07 BST 3 April

    Durham 335 v Kent 11-1

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Durham missed out on a third batting point by 15 runs but debutants Kasey Aldridge and Kemar Roach provided quite a bit of niggle value for the final wicket.

Their partnership was worth 45 and came to an end when Roach was caught in the slips off the bowling of Grant Stewart for 21, with the new ball three overs away.

Stewart took 3-38 and debutant South African Glenton Stuurman took 4-83.

But with 16 overs remaining of day one Roach has got Ben Compton lbw in the first over for four.

  17. Postpublished at 18:06 BST 3 April

    Leics 4-0 v Sussex 361

The Leicestershire openers have a four-over mini-session to survive at Grace Road.

Regular Rishi Patel has a new opening partner this season, with Australia Test player Jake Weatherald having agreed to step in for the absent Peter Handscomb.

There's a bit of a breeze blowing across the ground as Patel edges Ollie Robinson's third ball along the floor between first and second slip for four.

  18. Postpublished at 18:06 BST 3 April

    Durham 335 v Kent 11-1

Zak Crawley gets off the mark with, wait for it. an uppish drive outside off stump off Kemar Roach, which flashes away to the deep point boundary.

Still plenty of time for Kent to bat under blue skies tonight - 14 overs infact.

  19. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:05 BST 3 April

    Hartley lbw b Sanderson 0 (Northants v Lancs 322-7)

And Northants have another as Tom Hartley lasts just three balls.

Ben Sanderson angles that towards leg stump and having got the required response with Hartley looking to knock to leg, the ball straightens and hits in front of middle and leg.

Great bit of seam bowling and Northants have taken three wickets for 10 runs.

  20. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:04 BST 3 April

    Hurst c Harrison b Conway 25 (Northants v Lancs 321-6)

Credit to Harry Conway for sticking at this and he now has two wickets in his last three overs.

A nice line tucks up Matty Hurst and the edge is taken comfortably by Calvin Harrison at second slip.

Northants have a second bowling point and a decent foothold in this contest if they can nip out the tail from here.
