  1. Aus 1-0published at 1 over

Gus Atkinson causes Travis Head a bit of trouble in his first over, clipping the opener's thigh pad then having him hop to fend off a delivery.

Head then gets off the mark by inside edging past his stumps, running a single as the ball runs to short fine.

A brief huddle for Ben Stokes and his men before they head to their field placings.

Gus Atkinson will open the bowling for England on his return to the side.

He'll bowl to Travis Head, with Jake Weatherald at the non-striker's end.

    On England's trip to Noosa...

It has got a bit loose, hasn't it?

You can get away with all sorts if you're picking up wins. Pardon the pun, they were a bit of a sitting duck.

Didn’t fly halfway round the world for this weather. It's freezing.

    Joe G, Melbourne

As Joe suggests, it's not exactly balmy conditions in Melbourne.

The temperature gauge currently rests at eleven degrees Celsius, with overcast skies.

England have walked out for the national anthems and land dedication in sweaters.

Steve Smith said yesterday there is 10mm of grass on the pitch - that's a lot.

It makes me wonder if England have the wrong team. On the one hand, Will Jacks' batting at number eight might be useful in a low-scoring game.

On the other, his primary function in this team is to bowl. I'd say if he bowls today, it has not got well for England. Maybe they should have followed Australia's lead - and their own plan from the first Test - and gone with five seamers.

  6. Australia line-up: All seam attackpublished at 23:17 GMT 25 December 2025

As Steve Smith said at the toss, Australia go into the fourth Test with an all-seam attack.

However, Pat Cummins won't be among them - hence why Smith was at the toss.

With the Ashes won, the Australia skipper is rested as he manages his return from a back injury, while Nathan Lyon is also out of the series with a hamstring injury.

Michael Neser, who starred at Brisbane, comes back in alongside Jhye Richardson, while Brendan Doggett misses out.

Meanwhile Smith's return from illness at Adelaide means Josh Inglis drops out of the side, with Usman Khawaja retaining a place in the middle order and Cameron Green dropping to number seven.

Australia: Travis Head, Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith (capt), Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey (wk), Cameron Green, Michael Neser, Mitchell Starc, Jhye Richardson, Scott Boland

There is a choir of children singing on the outfield. They've done so before play on the first morning of each Test. Given the festive season, it feels more fitting today. It's like a Home Alone film.

  9. England line-up: Pope and Archer outpublished at 23:09 GMT 25 December 2025

After a lean trot in the side, Ollie Pope comes out of the England side for the fourth Test in Melbourne.

In the 27-year-old's past seven Tests since making a century against India at Headingley in July, he averages 24.38.

He's replaced by Jacob Bethell, who makes his Ashes debut.

Meanwhile Jofra Archer, very much England's star man in this campaign, is also out of the team having been ruled out of the series with a side strain.

Gus Atkinson, who played in the first two Tests before seeing Josh Tongue take his place in Adelaide, comes back in.

England: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (capt), Jamie Smith, Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue

  10. 'Batters are going to have to be on their game'published at 23:08 GMT 25 December 2025

Australia captain Steve Smith speaking at the toss: "Nice to be back. I would have [bowled]. A bit of grass on the wicket, we're playing four quicks.

"The batters are going to have to be on their game, put pressure on when they need to.

"Brendan Doggett misses out, we've got a good squad of bowlers, looking forward how to see how they get on. It was a tough decision."

  11. 'Going to be hard work with the ball'published at 23:06 GMT 25 December 2025

England captain Ben Stokes:"We are going to have a bowl.

"Nice coverage of grass here, so we think it is going to be hard work with the ball this morning."

On Jacob Bethell starting for England: "That first 5 mins is the toughest. Then, once you get out there and play a game of cricket, all those nerves will go away.

"We are lucky to part in a sport like this, and we're all looking forward to it."
