Travis Head will be fuming with himself. So many times you see those get a batter out, or it squirts away for four.

The contrast between Atkinson and Carse here is striking. I like Carse, but he’s not been at it this series, and they’re flying everywhere here. Would have loved to see Matthew Potts come in for a bit more control.

  4. Aus 30-1published at 7 overs

Marnus Labuschagne comes to the crease, and Gus Atkinson does well to get down and cut off driven runs from his first ball.

Two deliveries later and the Australia number three gets off the mark with a clipped shot through mid-on, with the ball cut off on the rope.

A little under edge cannoning into the middle and leg stump. That's a good wicket for England. Getting rid of the dangerous Travis Head. A good breakthrough for England.

    Head b Atkinson 12 (Aus 27-1)

    No plan needed now!

Travis Head edges a cut straight onto his stumps off Gus Atkinson's first delivery.

If there was a plan today, it was to bowl tight to Head's body this morning, and the opener was a little cramped for room there.

Over pitching from Brydon Carse. Too full...

England have not come up with a plan to try and get Travis Head out.

You have got to be fit if you keep getting pummelled through extra cover.

  8. Aus 27-0published at 6 overs

There's the first four off the bat for Australia. And, indeed, the second.

Back to back boundaries for Travis Head, who twice drives Brydon Carse confidently through the covers.

Jake Weatherald punches a drive straight into the pitch, seeing it loop over the bowler and allowing him to run two.

He then gets his four through the covers, beating the diving Ben Stokes to the boundary as Australia pick up 15 runs from the over.

  9. Aus 12-0published at 5 overs

A first maiden for the day for Gus Atkinson, bowling to Jake Weatherald.

The Australia opener cuts hard into the Melbourne turf, but the ball is cut off by Jacob Bethell at gully.

I disagree with David at 23:36. I'm behind England to win the last 2 Tests, and to win convincingly, true Bazball fashion.

Gus Atkinson has started off well, but Brydon Carse has been a bit leg side. Atkinson has hit a nice rhythm.

  12. Aus 12-0published at 4 overs

A hopeful shout for caught behind from Jamie Smith, who chucks the ball in the air after collecting Brydon Carse's last delivery.

It pretty evidently came off the back of Travis Head's thigh as he leapt in the air, and doesn't interest anyone else in the ground.

The pitch is nipping loads, Starc would have two wickets by now. A good toss to win!

England will be desperate to get a few with the new ball. We have been loose with the new ball, and it is so crucial in Australia to try to get yourself one or two early on.

  15. Aus 9-0published at 3 overs

Jake Weatherald gets his innings going, knocking Gus Atkinson into the covers for two.

A single into the leg side gets him off strike, and Travis Head leaves a final delivery with good carry from Atkinson.

Teams winning the toss have opted to bowl in four of the last five Tests at the MCG.

In the five Tests before that at this venue, teams winning the toss opted to bat first four times, highlighting the change in the nature of the track at this venue.

In the 2017-18 Ashes Test here, where Alastair Cook scored 244, we saw only 24 wickets fall in five days, with the ICC labelling the pitch as 'poor'. Since then, the trend has gone the other way. In fact, since the start of 2018, the MCG has seen the lowest batting average (25.9) of any Australian venue.

It is the cricket-smarts that we have been lacking in these three Test matches.

Not good enough for long enough.

  18. Aus 6-0published at 2 overs

Brydon Carse has the ball at the other end and he starts with a no-ball after over-stepping.

He then fires down a delivery that clips Travis Head's leg and heads away for for four leg byes.

The rest of the over goes better, with signs of movement and Head unable to pick-up any more runs.

So, how many days will this one last? I'd guess three days. I can't see England getting a result at all, confidence is well and truly shot.
