    Eng 23-2

Nat Sciver-Brunt is struck on the front pad. Shabnim Ismail is interested and convinces her skipper to review. Is it going down leg? I think so.

It will be no surprise that of all the powerplay bowlers in this tournament, Marizanne Kapp has pitched the most balls on a good length, but to put a number to this statement, Kapp has landed a huge 78% of her new-ball deliveries on a classic good length.

After all of the talk and plenty of doubt over how fit she actually is, I bet England are delighted they have Nat Sciver-Brunt in their XI in this situation.

  4. Eng 22-2published at 3 overs

Alice Capsey is the new batter in and plays and misses another terrific delivery from Marizanne Kapp, who has been pretty much unplayable at times today.

Two from the over and that all-important wicket.

What a delivery. There seems to be a little bit of movement.

That is huge for South Africa.

    Wyatt-Hodge b Kapp 12 (Eng 20-2)

Danni Wyatt-Hodge has enjoyed an excellent tournament so far but Marizanne Kapp gets a slight bit of swing as the ball clatters into middle and off.

Is that the last time we see Wyatt-Hodge bat in this tournament?

This South Africa seam attack is something else.

Out of retirement and Ismail is still one of the quickest new-ball bowlers on the circuit. At this World Cup she has bowled at an average of 72 mph, second only to New Zealand's Bree Illing; and that is only if you take it to decimal places.

  9. Eng 20-1published at 2 overs

Now then. This looked like a boundary as a diving Annerie Dercksen makes a stop in the deep but her body appears to be touching the boundary foam. But the umpire disagrees.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge almost chops on again. It's all happening.

That is so close. That was so close.

Millimetres away from off-stump and that was one of the quickest Ismail has bowled.

  11. Eng 17-1published at 1.5 overs

Shabnim Ismail bowls down the leg side for four wides.

Make that four more. This time Danni Wyatt-Hodge chops it into the ground which is agonisingly close to her stumps and then over to wicketkeeper for four. Lucky, but they all count.

Of the six WT20Is played here, only the two highest targets set have been successfully defended, and by close margins:

    • In 2023, England posted 186-9 against Australia and won by just three runs
    • In 2025, England posted 171-9 against India and won by just five runs
  13. Eng 8-1published at 1.3 overs

A big cheer for the returning at Nat Sciver-Brunt as she makes her way to the middle. The skipper is off the mark with a single.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge, meanwhile, guides the ball down to the third boundary.

That is Ismail's fifth wicket in the World Cup. Ismail was very unhappy with herself throughout this World Cup. She was miserable that she hadn't made a more significant impact, and that is an impact.

  15. wicket

    Jones c Dercksen b Ismail 2

Shabnim Ismail strikes with her first delivery.

It's on the up and Amy Jones cuts it straight to the fielder at point. It was probably there to be hit but Jones couldn't get hold of it.

England were already two down by this point when these sides met in the 50-over World Cup semi-final last year.

This map shows all of the fours scored by Danni Wyatt-Hodge in the powerplay overs of this T20 World Cup. There's a strong tendency to slash through the off side.

It looks very, very green. If South Africa are able to break through, that is where the game will be won and lost.

It seems silly to say because it is just starting but this passage of play is crucial.

  19. Eng 3-0published at 1 over

Amy Jones clips it into the leg side for a single to bring Danni Wyatt-Hodge on strike.

Ooh! The danger-woman plays and misses at two deliveries outside off, before getting off the mark with a single.

Wyatt-Hodge v Marizanne Kapp is already brewing into an intriguing battle.

Maybe it's just me getting the feels after following this tournament on the road but this feels like a particularly partisan Oval crowd.

The anthem was belted out. Lots of loud cries of "Come on England!".

The England team have been saying for a week how much they love playing here.

They have never lost at The Oval. Never. Ever...
