These wickets this morning have been brought about by change of conditions and some good bowling from England.

Mainly Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue, both the most experienced bowlers for England. They've both deserved that.

  2. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 70.2 overs

    Phillips c Bethell b Archer 3 (NZ 307-6)

Glenn Phillips thrashes at Jofra Archer and is caught by Jacob Bethell at gully.

Tempting driveable length for Phillips who has chewing gum feet, as Sir Geoffrey used to say, and throws his hands at it but away from his body, with his boots stuck in the crease.

A good set-up by Archer, who had used the bouncer effectively in his previous over to Phillips.

  3. NZ 307-5published at 70 overs

Hmmm, definitely doesn't appear the right move by the England skipper.

Daryl Mitchell cuts Joe Root for four then reverse sweeps him for four more at the end of the over.

    12 runs off the over.

  4. 50 runs

Fifty for Mitchellpublished at 69.2 overs

Joe Root into the attack. Is this the right move?

Daryl Mitchell reverse sweeps the England skipper for four to bring up his half-century.

  5. drinks break

New Zealand 295-5 at drinkspublished at 12:05 BST 20 June

Time for a bit of liquid refreshment.

  6. NZ 295-5published at 69 overs

It will be intriguing to see how England go about the chase, Dan.

Jofra Archer returns, and Daryl Mitchell get himself in a tangle after failing to pick a short ball which climbs into him.

Mitchell shaped to defend, but turns his head away and the ball strikes the top of the bat handle before landing safe.

Archer goes short again to Glenn Phillips with his final ball, and the Kiwi batter ends up flat on his back taking evasive action.

    Aggressive fast bowling from Archer.

New Zealand can literally bat for as long as they like right now due to Bazball. They could set England 500+ to win off 90 overs and they know England will try and chase it down and give them enough chances to take wickets.

  8. NZ 293-5published at 68 overs

Glenn Phillips, first-innings centurion, is the new batter for New Zealand.

He's off the mark with a gentle glance off his pads.

Josh Tongue has 2-60 off 17 overs.

It hits the heels of Joe Root's hands, good pace on it from Josh Tongue. In the parry, Root manages to angle it towards wicketkeeper James Rew who is standing not too far away and they end up in a ruck on the floor, competing to take the rebound catch.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 67.1 overs

    Blundell c Rew b Tongue 16 (NZ 285-5)

Caught down the leg side as Joe Root parries at leg slip and James Rew reacts to claim the catch.

It's full from Josh Tongue and Tom Blundell attempts to work it legside but glances it to Root who palms it up.

However, Rew had followed the line of the ball and was in place to catch the rebound.

    Good question, Steven.

If they can take it deep to day five it with a bit of guts it will earn these players so much-needed credit in the bank.

    Sonny Baker replaces Jofra Archer.

Baker bowls one short but Daryl Mitchell is relaxed enough to lean back and guide it through the vacant third region for four.

The interesting bit of this match is what is England's post-Ashes attitude at this stage of a Test when its unlikely they'll be able to chase the runs.

  14. NZ 284-4published at 66 overs

Josh Tongue content to nag away outside off stump. Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell happy to show some respect.

This is now the most byes England have conceded in a Test since 2014.

  16. NZ 282-4published at 65 overs

Jofra Archer, chunky white watch on his left wrist, digs the first ball of the over in short and it sails over the head of Daryl Mitchell and indeed James Rew's as well.

Mitchell pulls another short ball from Archer for a single off the final ball of the over to move on to 40.

New Zealand's lead now up to 382. More than England have ever chased in the fourth innings of a Test match.

From 2019 to 2024, England conceded 300+ twice in the same home Test on just one occasion. Since the start of last summer, they've done it three times - and they're about to again.

  18. NZ 274-4published at 64 overs

Tom Blundell digs out a yorker from Josh Tongue.

Next ball there's grimace from the Kiwi batter after he gets clocked by one which climbs into him into his hip.

Just one run off the over.

  19. NZ 273-4published at 63 overs

The sun is out The Oval but there are definitely a few more clouds about today in south London. Fans are still trickling into the ground.

Jofra Archer strays down the legside and it's easy pickings for Tom Blundell, who flicks it fine for four.

Archer asks for a change in the field - but Root tells him its the first bad ball he's bowled this morning and encourages him to stick with it.

Re Gus at 11:32. What have we seen in the last four years that suggests England can bat for more than a day? Batted 110+ overs four times in 89 Bazball innings.
