This situation is good for New Zealand. England aren't going to get near 455 and it gives them plenty of time for victory. England need to play for a draw, nothing risky, as they can't win this one. Need a miracle. Well played NZ, from an England supporter.

There should a competition as to which England batter will get out to the worst shot. I'm putting my money on Harry Brook trying to hit a six off his first ball.

    Richard, Solihull

Easy this. Tons from Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Joe Root and Harry Brook and a few runs from James Rew see us over the line.

  2. Eng 8-0published at 2 overs

Another edge from Emilio Gay, and a first four.

Dug in by right-armer Kyle Jamieson, who is bowling around the wicket to the left-hander, and Gay actually rides it out fairly well, with his edge/shot flying past the cordon and to the ropes.

It certainly hit Daryl Mitchell on the knee, it's just under the left hand glove. It's very low.

  4. Eng 2-0published at 1 over

    Target: 463

Ben Duckett gets his and England's innings underway, knocking Matt Henry's fourth ball to point for a single.

That brings fellow left-hander Emilio Gay on strike, and he edges the last ball of the over just in front of diving wicketkeeper Tom Blundell.

The ball ricochets off first slip Daryl Mitchell's knee and Gay takes another run.

This is going to rely on how frequently there are catching opportunities for New Zealand. It's going to rely on movement and a little bit of seam from Matt Henry in particular.

Well, if England were to chase this down then these first few overs would be the start of something remarkable.

Ben Duckett faces Matt Henry, with Emilio Gay at the other end.

Appropriately as it turned out, I listened to the first Test while in Birmingham’s coffin Museum…

I was following the first innings of the Headingley Ashes Test of 2019 whilst walking around Buckingham Palace... grimacing as our batting collapsed. Still, it all turned out quite well!

England will need to pull off a record fourth-innings chase in Tests to win this match.

The current record is 418, which West Indies chased down to beat Australia at St John's in 2003.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 87.1 overs

Henry c Duckett b Baker 1 (NZ 362 all out)

Indeed, England wrap it up from the following delivery.

It's Matt Henry's turn to try a big shot and instead balloon it up in the air, with the ball dropping for Ben Duckett at extra cover.

New Zealand are bowled out for 362 - England need 463 runs to win or to bat out four and a half sessions for a draw.

Well bowled by Matt Fisher just getting a reward for his efforts yesterday. That's gone a long way up, it's a decent catch from Emilio Gay. He gets under it and catches it safely.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 87 overs

    Smith c Gay b Fisher 38 (NZ 362-9)

    Caught this time!

Nathan Smith goes for a big heave off the final ball of Matthew Fisher's over, sending the ball spiralling high into the south London skies.

Emilio Gay runs into position as the ball comes down and takes the catch a little in front of the square leg umpire.

A third wicket for Matthew Fisher, and England are one wicket from wrapping this up.

16% of Matt Fisher's deliveries in this Test would have hit the stumps - the most for any bowler in the match.

  13. NZ 360-8published at 86 overs

Nathan Smith's single brings new batter Matt Henry on strike for the first time, and he plays out four balls from Sonny Baker without scoring.

A good effort from Jofra Archer, he might have seen it just a little bit too late. He just couldn't quite get the fingers under it. Tricky one.

  15. dropped catch

Smith dropped on 36published at 85.2 overs

    NZ 360-8

    Dropped in the deep!

Having already smacked Sonny Baker through fine leg for four, Nathan Smith launches the next ball square.

Jofra Archer is perhaps a little slow coming off the rope and can't quite take the catch diving forward.

Smith takes a single to move to 37 from 46 balls.

There's still a little bit of something in this surface. You don't want to be bowling on it in 32 degrees but when the clouds come in, it just does a little bit.

I followed the live text of the 2019 World Cup final overs from the toilet of a French hotel, while my group of US tourists (I was a tour guide) had dinner, they asked if I was OK having been in there 30 minutes...

    Michael, Berlin

My one and (so far only) trip to the Louvre was Bastille Day of 2019, which happened to coincide with a certain World Cup final and Super Over. Locals seemed somewhat gratified to see such emotional reactions to the great works therein - didn't tell them what was actually happening...

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 85 overs

    Jamieson b Fisher 6 (NZ 355-8)

    Four and out!

Having faced four dot balls from Matthew Fisher, Kyle Jamieson makes room and dispatches a delivery down the ground for a one-bounce four.

He goes to play the same shot off the last ball of the over but the delivery is fuller and sends the middle stump cartwheeling.

In fact, the stump is broken, or at least the camera inside it is. It's going to be replaced.

I didn't want to get into a contest of caterpillar-based marathon records, but I'm going to anyway and hope it doesn't descend into blind, ugly violence.

My friend Nick was part of a team that set a time of 2:57:31 in a six-man caterpillar costume.

Meanwhile Sonny Baker replaces Jacob Bethell, and sends down a maiden to Nathan Smith.
