Harry Brook will rarely score slowly.

He added 58 from 54 balls today, but will be disappointed he couldn't extend his fourth wicket partnership with Joe Root.

Joe Root is a batting genius, not a genius captain. We need a captain then a team, old school. The best captain is Ben Stokes. Simple.

One bright spot for England was Joe Root becoming only the second batter in Tests to pass 14,000 runs.

The 35-year-old, who follows Sachin Tendulkar in reaching the landmark, has 41 Test centuries and will be hoping to make it 42 tomorrow.

  6. 'Have to be ruthless tomorrow'published at 18:44 BST

New Zealand seamer Kyle Jamieson speaking to Sky Sports: "It's nice to have them five down rather than four and it sets us up for tomorrow.

"We have been pretty good for the most part as a bowling unit which is what is needed on this wicket. We have to stay ruthless and make sure we are there tomorrow."

On the late dismissal of James Rew: "I think Tom [Latham] was thinking it was straight but maybe height was an issue. I thought umpire's call on height, but thankfully it stayed a little lower."

On his own form: "I was lucky not to play a whole heap of IPL and trained in the nets. But a different gravey bowling here three on the bounce."

A terrible start to their unlikely chase of 433 as England slipped to 40-3, losing Emilio Gay and Jacob Bethell in one Kyle Jamieson over and then Ben Duckett.

Joe Root and Harry Brook added 97 for the fourth wicket before Matt Henry lured an edge from the latter, while James Rew was dismissed on review just before the close.

Jamieson was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers with 3-37, while Henry and Will O'Rourke have one wicket apiece.

  8. Close - Eng 182-5published at 48 overs

    Root 75, Cox 0; target 433

Last over of the day - it goes to Kyle Jamieson, who has figures of 3-36.

Joe Root pulls the second ball down to fine leg for a single and Jordan Cox adds four more dot balls to his tally to finish us up.

He'll resume day five on zero, having faced 12 deliveries, while Root will return with 75 from 137 balls.

    New Zealand's day, once again.

  9. Eng 181-5published at 47 overs

Matt Henry on for Rachin Ravindra as New Zealand hunt for another late wicket.

He hurries through his over as his side look to get two in before the close.

Joe Root gets a single in from the first ball and Jordan Cox faces another five dot balls.

The ball that dismissed James Rew bounced 20cm less than other deliveries from Kyle Jamieson pitched on that length.

Jordan Cox arrives at the crease and will have to negotiate the quintessential tricky little spell at the end of the day.

He faces three deliveries without scoring as Kyle Jamieson records a wicket maiden.

    Rew lbw b Jamieson 15 (Eng 180-5)

    Well... I wasn't expecting that.

Kyle Jamieson's delivery, bowled from round the wicket to the left-hander James Rew, struck the England batter in a... delicate area.

"The ball's clearly missing the bat," declares the third umpire.

We move to ball tracking, and having seen some replays a few of the New Zealand fielders are walking away... but wait, it's all reds!

Clipping the top of the wicket apparently, and James Rew is, for the second time in this match, dismissed 10 minutes before the close of play.

  14. New Zealand reviewpublished at 45.2 overs

The tourists are taking a punt on another review.

Kyle Jamieson strikes James Rew as he tries to turn it into the leg side.

The seamer is very keen and he convinces his captain.

This feels like a huge innings for James Rew. He's had a scratchy game, but with the pressure of the result somewhat off if he can make a score that could set him up for a run in the side.

    George, London

You never know if this partnership last another 100 runs England have a small chance but James Rew is probably just going to nick off any minute now.

    Reeve, Twickenham

James Rew looks so scratchy. I'm confident he definitely isn't another Zak Crawley who looks good but can't stick in.

  18. Eng 175-4published at 44 overs

Given Kyle Jamieson's height and pace, you might assume that like other bulky tyros he may also leak runs.

Not so here - a quarter of his overs in this innings have been maidens, including this one to Joe Root.

Timed to perfection! Nice and low, bit of a risky shot when the odd one's bouncing but this one was full enough to commit to the shot.

  20. Eng 175-4published at 43 overs

Rachin Ravindra replaces Nathan Smith for New Zealand, and James Rew steps forward and sweeps the spinner for four behind square.

That moves him into double figures.
