  2. NZ 208-8published at 40.2 overs

A bouncer from Sam Curran and Blair Tickner swishes at it and a top edge flies over Jos Buttler and races away for four.

The Black Caps need 15 runs from 57 balls.

  3. NZ 204-8published at 40 overs

Every single run vital now, and the home fans are cheering every one.

Zak Foulkes and Blair Tickner pick up a single apiece off Adil Rashid's first two balls.

The crowd are even more excited when Tickner powerfully drives the England leg-spinner's fourth ball through the covers for four.

New Zealand still have plenty of overs to get these runs.

England have chipped away at New Zealand since the powerplay, regularly taking wickets and keeping the run rate down. They’ve now got a real shot at the tail here.

    • Powerplay: 64 runs, 0 wickets - Econ 6.4

Sam Curran finishes with a wicket maiden.

Now then! A huge wicket in this game.

Sam Curran comes round the wicket to Daryl Mitchell and it does the trick.

The left-arm seamer draws Mitchell into driving at one that just does enough off the seam and moves away to take the edge of the bat.

Mitchell throws his head back in frustration. England are cock-a-hoop.

Re: Dan in Sheffield at 07:21. The team and management have told us that this series is seen as preparation for the Ashes. Which is why they've sent everyone out to New Zealand. Arrogance is exactly what it is.

Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton are all bowled out.

It's up to Adil Rashid and Sam Curran to win this for England from here.

Rashid's third over is nudged and nurdled by Zak Foulkes and Daryl Mitchell - four singles off the over. With 27 runs needed off 72 balls they will not mind just chipping away at the total.

  9. NZ 192-7published at 37 overs

The wicket fell after England skipper Harry Brook stationed Jacob Bethell at short leg under the lid. A curious fielding position that maybe got in the mind of Nathan Smith a little.

Zak Foulkes is the new batter, but Daryl Mitchell is the big wicket England need here.

Jamie Overton finishes his allotted 10 overs with 2-32. On top of his maiden ODI half-century that's a decent effort.

    Smith b Overton 2 (NZ 191-7)

    England are celebrating now!

Jamie Overton produces a nip-backer and Nathan Smith is bowled through the gate.

Overton runs away with his hand in the air - Alan Shearer-esque.

Yes we’re fulfilling our FTP obligations, but also choosing to play most of our top Ashes players in the games.

Not much celebration from England's players for that wicket. Have they given up hope here? New Zealand need 33 runs from 84 balls.

    Santner c Brook b Carse 27 (NZ 188-6)

Fair play to Harry Brook for having the courage to stick with Brydon Carse after he took a bit of tap in the previous over.

Mitchell Santner's entertaining cameo comes to an end when he attempts to hit one across the line and ends up hitting high into the night sky.

Brook is safe as houses under the catch.

The thing is, Mark. The ECB are not alone in this regard. It's a pattern across world cricket given the lure of franchise leagues. So I'm not sure the diagnosis is entirely accurate.

Another stunning shot from Mitchell Santner. The Kiwi skipper waspishly square drives Jamie Overton for four.

That fizzed along the turf all the way to the boundary.

May I suggest to the ECB that if they want a successful one-day international side, they don't reduce the domestic one-day cup to effectively a reserves competition?

    Daryl Mitchell's turn now.

The Kiwi left-hander wallops Brydon Carse down the ground. It does not quite have the legs on it to for six, but goes for four.

Next ball, Mitchell swings again and edges it behind for another cour.

Yes, I think that point needs to be made, Dan.

England haven't chosen to use these games as prep for the Ashes but are fulfilling them as part of the FTP.

An expensive over from Adil Rashid is enough for Harry Brook to summon Brydon Carse to replace the leg-spinner.

Mitchell Santner goes inside out to Carse and hammers him over deep cover for six. That was a full ball from Carse outside off stump.

A quite breathtaking cricket shot from Santner.

People moaning about the “arrogance of English cricket” thinking that this is good preparation for the Ashes seem to be missing the point that this likely isn’t our first choice of preparation - however, this is part of the Future Tours Programme and these matches will have had to be played at some point. Ultimately it’s just another example of there being too much cricket in the calendar.

New Zealand content to work the singles around and wait for something in the arc.

Harry Brook smears some sawdust down on the foot marks after a bit of grumbling about Jamie Overton.

England's mindset is like they need to bat hard and get 400 every time which just won't happen. It's as if they don't trust the bowlers to ever defend 300.
