Daryl Mitchell comes to the crease and will be licking his lips at the prospect of facing the English bowlers - he averages 110 against them in ODI cricket in six innings, with a strike rate of 97.

  2. NZ 86-2published at 13.4 overs

That brings in the in-form Daryl Mitchell and, with the all-rounder walking towards him, Sam Curran hurls a bouncer a mile over his head for five wides.

Sam Curran has broken the drought. Wicketless through his last six ODI innings and he breaks it with an absolute cracker to get the wicket of Rachin Ravindra.

Two new batters at the crease and a chance for England. Could there yet be a twist in this game?

  4. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 13.3 overs

    Ravindra b Curran 46 (NZ 81-2)

Two in five balls for England. Sam Curran sneaks one through Rachin Ravindra as the left-hander tries to work to leg.

  5. NZ 79-1published at 13 overs

    Target 223

If you were being harsh you'd say that's the only way England were going to take a wicket.

Nobody is picking that as the way the first wicket would fall! Devon Conway has no chance whatsoever of getting back.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 12.5 overs

Conway run out (Overton) 34 (NZ 78-1)

    How fortunate is this?!

Rachin Ravindra drills a drive back to Jamie Overton, Overton tries to catch it on the bounce, misjudges it and the ball hits his wrist and deflects onto the stumps at the non-striker's end. Conway is out of his ground and is run out!

  8. NZ 72-0published at 12 overs

    Conway 29, Ravindra 42

Sam Curran comes on and huffs and puffs through an over, mixing his pace as he goes, without ever really looking like taking a wicket.

  9. NZ 69-0published at 11 overs

    Target 223

I am losing track of all of the stats to sum up England's failings. I make it nine times out of 15 ODIs they've been bowled out this year.

Batting in the first 10 overs in this ODI series:

    • New Zealand: 143-4 - Run rate: 4.76 - Balls per wicket: 45
    • England: 131-11 - Run rate: 4.36 - Balls per wicket: 16
  11. 6 runs

    NZ 64-0published at 10 overs

    Target 223

Conway makes up for it somewhat by cutting the ball up and over backward point and into the stands where an enthusiastic gentleman takes the catch.

He slashes the final ball for four too, meaning 24 runs have come from Archer's over. He stomps away to his fielding position where it may be best to leave him for a while.

Conway's bat is in the air but his boot is beyond the line. He's slightly lucky but is in.

The ball has deflected for four overthrows too - another blow to England and an increasingly grumpy Archer.

If Devon Conway is run out here he'll be furious with himself.

He hasn't run his bat in.

  14. NZ 40-0published at 9 overs

    Target 223

It's a maiden to start from Jamie Overton. He's leading a one-man race for the player-of-the-match award from an England perspective.

Jofra Archer is actually changing ends...

  15. NZ 40-0published at 8.3 overs

Just a four-over opening spell today for Jofra Archer, who is replaced by Jamie Overton.

  16. NZ 40-0published at 8 overs

    Target 223

Glorious from Rachin Ravindra. First a pull and then a flick off the hip.

Brydon Carse, who has had a decent trip so far, struggling to stop the flow of runs here.

England were four down by this stage, if you're just joining us.

  17. NZ 31-0published at 7 overs

It's a great tussle, this. Archer goes short again as Devon Conway, perhaps unwisely, walks towards him. He'll be able to sniff the ball as it goes past his grille.

Devon Conway is looking unsettled by Archer’s pace here. Across his career, his average dips sharply against balls delivered at over 140kph (28 - 4 dismissals) compared to balls between 130-140kph where he averages 60 (7 dismissals).

  19. NZ 30-0published at 6 overs

That extra pace costs Brydon Carse as a top edge from Ravindra flies over Buttler for four. There is nothing wrong with the shot later in the over, however, as the elegant left-hander takes four through point.

With the first five overs done, England’s seamers haven’t found as much movement as the Kiwis had by the same stage, but are bowling considerably faster on average:

    • New Zealand average speed: 82.8 mph
    • England average speed: 86.4 mph
