  1. Australia reviewpublished at 85.3 overs

A sneaky review from Steve Smith for caught behind against Matthew Potts. The appeals didn't seem particularly enthusiastic.

It is now just a matter of patience for Australia. Bowl at the stumps and you will get your reward.

  3. Eng 329-9published at 85 overs

We know that Matthew Potts can bat (first-class century yadda yadda) but Josh Tongue does has a red-ball fifty to his name. He scored 55 (97) against Potts' Durham for Nottinghamshire last April.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is don't give up hope!

    England lead by 146 runs.

A fantastic innings from the young man Jacob Bethell. Getting picked without the experience was the right decision.

Jacob Bethell's wonderful innings come to an end. He will get some applause here from the Barmy Army.

    Bethell c Carey b Starc 154 (Eng 328-9)

Warm applause around the SCG as Jacob Bethell's memorable knock comes to an end.

He's nicked off Mitchell Starc and Alex Carey - as he's done so often this series - gobbles up the catch to his left.

Bethell is out for 154 (265). England lead by 145.

Jacob Bethell has been absolutely sublime, but I don’t understand how the more experienced batters like Crawley, Duckett, Pope, Brook, Jacks etc haven’t been able to read the situation and produce a similar performance in one of the many innings where it was required. Ability is definitely not the issue.

This is going to be about who gets bored or fed up first. How long can this England team go at one an over for?

  9. Eng 328-8published at 84 overs

Jacob Bethell swings and misses and Alex Carey takes a good catch low to his left. The crowd was interested in that as a caught behind; the players weren't.

Yet again, Bethell takes a single late in the over. Australia aren't doing much to stop those runs.

Mitchell Starc is searching for Jacob Bethell's edge and nearly tempts him with one that shapes away.

The over starts with four leg-byes, Bethell glancing one off his right elbow, and finishes with a single dug-out off his toes. Bethell is managing the strike well.

  11. How's stat?!published at 23:34 GMT 7 January

    Srinivas Vijaykumar
    CricViz analyst

Jacob Bethell has made the most while facing the Australian fifth bowling option (Webster, Head and Labuschagne) in this innings with 42 (56) at 75 strike rate.

While against the four full-time bowlers he's been a lot more circumspect scoring 111 (203) at 55 strike rate.

    • v Starc, Boland, Neser & Green - 31% attacking shots, 33% false shots
    • v Webster, Head, & Labuschagne - 60% attacking shots, 7% false shots

    Time for England to declare.

  13. Eng 322-8published at 82 overs

Once again, Scott Boland is getting plenty of nip. There's an lbw scare and he later beats Jacob Bethell's outside edge but England's number three is able to take a single off the penultimate delivery to retain the strike.

That is a really poor decision from Chris Gaffaney. Jacob Bethell was airborne.

Surely if you think that long, you must have some doubt.

Jacob Bethell survives! It's flying over the stumps. Good review.

The umpire thought about that for a long time. It makes sense to review it.

  18. England reviewpublished at 81.3 overs

Scott Boland turns round to appeal for lbw. Chris Gaffaney pauses, pauses, and raises his finger.

Jacob Bethell reviews. Height may be an issue?

It is asking a lot of a lower order player to face the new ball. Especially against Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland.

Matthew Potts needs to try and negotiate this.
