Well, that one shot shows us exactly why Ben Stokes has gone out there.

He is going to go absolutely berserk!

  2. Eng 2-0published at 1 over

Well, he's not going to hang around.

Ben Stokes absolutely sears his first ball along the ground to mid-off, then is unable to connect with a lap sweep.

He gets off the mark from the next, sending the ball down to third for a single to retain the strike.

Psychological masterstroke by Ben Stokes. With the series on the line, he knows the guys will go out and play their hearts out for him. Once they've chased down 400 to win, he'll then announce that actually he was only joking about retiring.

    Gary, Cambridgeshire

Odds on Ben Stokes facing the first ball and getting a golden duck?

    Mark, Aylesbury

Whats does the future hold. No Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood and James Anderson. Where are the characters coming from? Scary thought.

    Alan, Dunstable

  4. Eng 1-0published at 0.3 overs

A touch fortunate - Ben Duckett pops a shot aerially into the leg side.

It clears the two fielders in the ring and lands safely.

Ben Stokes turns down a second run and will now face...

Stokes hasn't been in the best of form with the bat but he must have clarity of thought here.

We know that he will give it everything he has got and leave nothing out there.

If he feels like he can make a contribution, no problem with that. He has been capable of extraordinary innings in the past so let's see if he's got another one in him!

This is an extraordinary spectacle, I did not expect this.

He's bowled 25 overs, it is remarkable.

  8. Eng 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Ben Stokes won't face the first ball - Ben Duckett is going to take the first ball.

Nathan Smith, round the wicket to the left-hander from the Radcliffe Road End, has his first delivery spit off the pitch and Duckett fends it off.

    Well, here we go!

Ben Stokes is walking out to bat with Ben Duckett.

He gets a guard of honour from all of the New Zealand line-up this time.

Like the move or not, the man is box office.

A reminder that the highest fourth-innings run chase in a Test match at Trent Bridge came in June 2022, in the early days of Bazball, when England achieved a target of 299 for loss of five wickets.

England's next highest at the ground in Nottingham also came against the Kiws when they chased down 284 to clinch a four-wicket win in June 2004.

The late Graham Thorpe's 104 not out in the second innings of the latter of those matches was key to the win.

Why on earth would you declare? Daryl Mitchell was on strike for the next over and can easily strike three or four important boundaries. Time is never a factor with this England side.

    Mark, Swansea

Loved this innings from Mitchell. Proper Test match innings on a wearing pitch. Hopefully we can show as much character as New Zealand have throughout this series.

    Eddie, Skipton

So so glad Mitchell got 100 runs. Well played

    They're calling them in!

Tom Latham ends the New Zealand innings after Ben Sears faces two more dot balls.

    England will chase 373.

Ben Stokes sprints off the field... surely not?

    NZ 288-9

    A battling century!

Daryl Mitchell turns Gus Atkinson behind square for four to move to 99, then, three balls later, knocks a single to bring up the landmark.

A remarkably paced innings - 241 balls, he scored 18 off his first 26 balls, was 20 off 60 overnight, was on 63 off 210 at tea today, then added 37 off 31 balls.

  15. NZ 283-9published at 93 overs

Daryl Mitchell sends Jofra Archer's first ball square and hurries through a two.

He takes a further single from the four ball of the over, and Sears survives the rest of it.

Daryl Mitchell has been hit (on the helmet, glove, or body) 13 times in this innings.

Only four Test innings in the CricViz database (going back to 2006) have more.

  17. NZ 279-9published at 92 overs

Ben Sears sees out the last three balls of Gus Atkinson's over.

Daryl Mitchell, on 92 and with one injured partner remaining, will face Jofra Archer.

It's been a cracking wicket. Day one was in favour of the batter but now it's different.

    All reds, inevitable.

But what's this - Ben Sears is coming back out! Evidently they've patched up his finger.

He resumes with 19 from 32 balls.

  20. New Zealand reviewpublished at 16:50 BST

    And that's probably that.

Gus Atkinson strikes Will O'Rourke plumb in front.

The big New Zealand seamer takes a cursory review while also walking off in case you wanted to know how confident he is.
