    NZ 288-9

    A battling century!

Daryl Mitchell turns Gus Atkinson behind square for four to move to 99, then, three balls later, knocks a single to bring up the landmark.

A remarkably paced innings - 241 balls, he scored 18 off his first 26 balls, was 20 off 60 overnight, was on 63 off 210 at tea today, then added 37 off 31 balls.

  2. NZ 283-9published at 93 overs

Daryl Mitchell sends Jofra Archer's first ball square and hurries through a two.

He takes a further single from the four ball of the over, and Sears survives the rest of it.

Daryl Mitchell has been hit (on the helmet, glove, or body) 13 times in this innings.

Only four Test innings in the CricViz database (going back to 2006) have more.

  4. NZ 279-9published at 92 overs

Ben Sears sees out the last three balls of Gus Atkinson's over.

Daryl Mitchell, on 92 and with one injured partner remaining, will face Jofra Archer.

It's been a cracking wicket. Day one was in favour of the batter but now it's different.

    All reds, inevitable.

But what's this - Ben Sears is coming back out! Evidently they've patched up his finger.

He resumes with 19 from 32 balls.

  7. New Zealand reviewpublished at 16:50 BST

    And that's probably that.

Gus Atkinson strikes Will O'Rourke plumb in front.

The big New Zealand seamer takes a cursory review while also walking off in case you wanted to know how confident he is.

  8. NZ 278-8published at 91 overs

    Lead by 362

Finally the Jofra Archer over comes to end, with Daryl Mitchell dispatching a pull through mid-wicket for four.

That takes him into the nineties.

  9. Ben Sears retirespublished at 16:46 BST

Ben Sears won't be able to bat again, he's walking off the field.

Bad news for New Zealand as another member of their attack goes down.

On comes Will O'Rourke, off the back of a career-best 19 in the first innings.

  10. NZ 274-8published at 90.5 overs

Now Ben Sears takes one on the glove - it's brutal out there!

He wrings his hand as he runs a single off Jofra Archer, and the physio has to come to take a look.

Meanwhile Daryl Mitchell ran from the non-striker's end because he was having trouble with some element of his new helmet.

The run does bring up the 50 partnership off 9.4 overs.

  11. NZ 270-8published at 90.1 overs

Jofra Archer back on... and he too lands a ball on Daryl Mitchell's body.

In the ribs this time - Mitchell takes off his helmet and it seems he has got a replacement coming out now.

  12. NZ 270-8published at 90 overs

    Lead by 354

Finally ready to get going again - although to be honest we could all do with a breather.

Daryl Mitchell gets down the other end off the first of Gus Atkinson's two remaining deliveries, before the England seamer fizzes the ball past the shoulder of Ben Sears' bat.

They appear to be repairing Daryl Mitchell's helmet rather than bringing out a replacement.

It's taking a fair while, so watch Michael Vaughan's reaction to Ben Stokes' retirement.

    That was a brutal delivery!

  15. NZ 269-8published at 89.4 overs

    Ouch.

Gus Atkinson, on with the new ball, plants a bouncer right on the grille of Daryl Mitchell.

The New Zealand batter tried to duck under the short ball but it kept low and smashed into the helmet.

That made a mighty thwack sound, and indeed it has accounted for the new ball, just nine balls old - the umpires bring out a selection of replacements.

  17. new ball

    NZ 265-8published at 89 overs

After one ball of Josh Tongue's over, England decide to take the new ball.

The seamer delivers three dot balls with the new cherry before Ben Sears takes two through mid-off.

Ben Stokes the man chasing the ball down.

  18. NZ 262-8published at 88 overs

Shoaib Bashir rattles through a quieter over - a couple of singles from it.

    This partnership is worth 38.

    I was shocked.

I thought there might be change post Test match, but Ben Stokes was at the bottom of my list of things to change.
