If (and it is a big if) England manage not to lose this Test match it will paper over the problems that everyone can see with selection and the way this team chose to play. We are not world beaters and to pretending otherwise is coming home to roost.

    Charles, Devon

It’s a Test match. Why do England seem to feel they have to be finished in less than the allocated time. Tire the opposition bowlers out.

    Paul, Liverpool

  4. NZ 123-3published at 38 overs

A first maiden of the day for Ben Stokes, with Rachin Ravindra unable to get him away.

Six dot balls for the New Zealand number three, who only faced one ball in the first couple of overs of the day.

Daryl Mitchell likes to play well outside his crease and even charge the bowlers more often than not. His average impact point of 2.2m from the stumps is the highest for any batter in this series.

It might not be a bad idea for Jamie Smith to stand up to the stumps - apart from to Jofra Archer - to limit his movement and pin him to the crease.

Now Jofra Archer beats the outside edge!

Daryl Mitchell is living a bit of a charmed life, but he gets through the final ball of the over.

  7. New Zealand review - not outpublished at 36.2 overs

    NZ 123-3

A second-ball wicket for Jofra Archer?

He strikes Daryl Mitchell on the pads and goes up very confidently.

The umpire agrees with him and raises a finger - Mitchell decides to use one of New Zealand's three reviews.

    Let's see... over the top!

The ball struck a little above the knee roll and the side view does show Mitchell was batting out of his crease.

He survives, and New Zealand retain their review.

If those runs are below 300, then it only takes a magical innings. If you are in the New Zealand camp, you won't be thinking that this is done and dusted.

A big day four at Trent Bridge.

New Zealand resume on 120-3, a lead of 204.

Add 50-100 runs, they set-up an extremely challenging chase for England.

Add much more than that and we'll be looking at a classic fourth innings if the hosts were to take the victory.

Lose and it's extends a poor run of form to only two wins in 10 matches and a home series defeat.

England's bowlers need to be in the wickets early doors - let's see how they get on.
