With the players out on the field, some pretty dramatic news coming out of the ECB.

Ben Stokes, the England Test captain since 2022, has announced he will retire from international cricket at the end of this Test.

The 35-year-old announced his decision to his team-mates in the Trent Bridge dressing room today.

Stokes is playing in his 122nd Test, and he also featured in 114 ODIs, winning the World Cup in 2019, plus 43 T20s.

We'll have plenty of reaction to this story over the next few hours, no doubt.

  2. NZ 222-7published at 80 overs

    Lead by 306 runs

Ben Stokes continues. He's putting his body through the wringer here.

An absolute peach of a delivery to Zak Foulkes from the penultimate ball of the over, wide of the crease which just misses the outside edge.

Stokes throws his head back in frustration.

Thank you to everyone who submitted your choice of non-fiction cricket books, my birthday and Christmas list is now complete. Nothing better on a cold winter day than reading about cricket.

  4. NZ 221-7published at 79 overs

A single off Gus Atkinson's latest over. Daryl Mitchell up to 39 off 198 balls now.

Re cricket books. Shameless plug for 'Evita Burned Down Our Pavilion - A Latin American Cricket Odyssey'.

I resisted as long as possible...

  5. NZ 220-7published at 78 overs

Every run is precious here. England need to keep the pressure on.

    Gus Atkinson continues.

  6. Foulkes survivespublished at 77.4 overs

    No there is not.

There is a noise on UltraEdge, but it is after the ball has passed the bat.

It's brushed the pocket of Zak Foulkes.

  7. England reviewpublished at 77.4 overs

Jamie Smith talks Ben Stokes into reviewing another caught behind.

This time he's beaten the outside edge of Zak Foulkes' bat.

Is there a feather on this?

This England side over the last few years have had some incredible chases. If you look at those chases, the pitch got better and better. This pitch is very different.

  9. NZ 218-7published at 77 overs

Zak Foulkes works Gus Atkinson into the off side before Daryl Mitchell works the England seamer off his pads for a couple.

New Zealand's lead is now 302 runs.

England's run chase - if successful - will be a record for the fourth innings in Test matches at this ground.

  10. NZ 215-7published at 76 overs

Ben Stokes backs that maiden up from Gus Atkinson with another six dots.

England are making New Zealand work for every run.

  11. NZ 215-7published at 75 overs

    A maiden from Gus Atkinson.

Not least because Ben Duckett produces a find diving stop to cut off an expansive drive from Zak Foulkes at short cover.

New Zealand lead by 299 runs.

  12. NZ 215-7published at 74 overs

Ben Stokes summoning everything from his energy reserves as he continues.

Daryl Mitchell and Zak Foulkes are both fairly steady, nudging and nurdling, as they nurse New Zealand towards a lead of 300.

I think England have been excellent in the field.

  15. NZ 211-7published at 73 overs

Just the single off Gus Atkinson's over.

Not least thanks to a fine bit of fielding from Shoaib Bashir at point from the final delivery to deny Zak Foulkes.

A good first half of the session for England, can they continue the momentum?

    Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport cricket correspondent at Trent Bridge

Ben Stokes is in a long spell, so has a lot on his plate. It's probably reasonable to say he needs a bit of support with the captaincy when he's busting a gut with the ball.

At the start of Jofra Archer's over, Emilio Gay drifted behind on square on the leg-side boundary, to make it three men in that region - there was also a long leg and a leg slip. No-ball called.

Could someone have noticed? At the time, England vice-captain Harry Brook was practising leaping into the arms of Jacob Bethell.
