Summary

Have your say on England men this summer

  1. NZ 45-0published at 10 overs

First change for England as Josh Tongue replaces Jofra Archer - I suspect we won't see any eight-over spells from him in these conditions, as we did at The Oval.

It's a productive over for New Zealand, with Tom Latham taking the first ball off his toes and sending it for four through mid-wicket, then replicating the same shot for another boundary two deliveries later.

Shoaib Bashir has already been warming up.

Ben Stokes will be thinking 'if I were a couple yards to my left, I would have got it.'

  4. NZ 36-0published at 9 overs

Another edge goes wide of England's fielders, as Devon Conway splices an edge off Gus Atkinson through backward point for four.

Frustrating for England, who also conceded a Tom Latham three earlier in the over through a similar area.

Pitch is playing well. When the bowlers have missed, there's been runs on offer. Particularly when it's been overpitched. New Zealand have made a good start.

  6. NZ 29-0published at 8 overs

Jofra Archer rolls in for another over - as is pretty customary, he's wearing a long-sleeved white undershirt beneath his short-sleeved top.

Wouldn't be my choice in this weather, to be honest.

There does at least appear to be a touch of breeze rippling the England shirts, which will offer some relief.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I as a bowler would always prefer a wall of people there to catch an edge rather than hedging my bets with two. I always felt as though my nicks went finer anyway.

  8. NZ 26-0published at 7 overs

Decent from Gus Atkinson, sending his delivery just past the edge of Devon Conway's bat.

The left-hander takes a single from the following delivery to retain the strike - the only run from the over.

England have enjoyed remarkable success against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, winning all four of their matches at the venue before this Test and remaining unbeaten across more than three decades of meetings (since 1994). With a 100% win rate, Trent Bridge stands out as England's most dominant ground against New Zealand.

They'll be gutted there wasn't a third slip there!

  11. NZ 25-0published at 6 overs

    Just past the fingertips!

Jofra Archer draws an edge from Tom Latham and the ball flies past the cordon - Harry Brook puts in a full-length dive at second slip but the chance evades him.

    Four for Latham, somewhat fortuitously.

Worst sunburn I ever got was at a Yorkshire v Warwickshire county match at Headingley in 1997. Ended up with ears that resembled pork scratchings the following day.

    Simon, Bidford on Avon

Somehow, my dad and I both managed to get sunburnt at Trent Bridge last year, despite being in the shade. Something to do with magic UV rays reflecting off the grass, apparently. Hoping not to repeat that when we're there on Saturday!

    William, Westminster

My hottest experience was in Indore, India for the seventh and final ODI in 2006. There were very few England fans left by that stage in the tour, but those that were left hid under bin lids in the stands!

Three for Tom Latham, clipping Gus Atkinson square.

Devon Conway goes one better from the following delivery, picking up his third four through the covers.

Attending my first Test match since my dad died earlier this year. Grew up listening to Test Match Special with him and my brother. Feels odd being here without being able to message him about it but I’m enjoying remembering him here today in the sunshine.

    James, Trent Bridge

  15. NZ 14-0published at 4 overs

Another four through the covers for Devon Conway, driving Jofra Archer this time.

In the Test that Andy mentions, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope all made centuries from numbers one-three - only one of them plays today.

Zimbabwe chose to bowl that day.

Recent Tests at this ground have been high scoring. Last year, England beat Zimbabwe comfortably, scoring 565-6 in their first and only innings.

  17. NZ 9-0published at 3 overs

Devon Conway denies Gus Atkinson a maiden, driving the final ball of the over sharply through the covers for four.

Those are his first runs in the match.

It certainly does look mighty hot at Trent Bridge, Olly.

The warmest I've ever been at a cricket match is undoubtedly the 2009 Test in Sydney, Australia facing South Africa in Matthew Hayden's final Test.

I was stuck in a stand that was out of the shade for the duration of the match, and it was pretty ghastly.

What's the hottest you've been at a cricket match, and what made it distinct? I'm thinking knee-deep puddles of sweat, champagne boiling in its bottles, scorebooks spontaneously bursting into flame...

I'm glad I'm in my air conditioned office, pretending to look busy, rather than out there bowling, pretending I might take a wicket. Looks mighty hot.

  20. NZ 5-0published at 2 overs

Jofra Archer takes the second over and Tom Latham takes consecutive twos off him.

The first is half-stopped by Shoaib Bashir at mid-on, while the second evades a diving Jacob Bethell at gully.
