Re David [14.41], the Spurs/Essex cross overs surprisingly rich, with my most fans of smooth particularly downbeat despite Essex's recent success. But Elgar has been in v poor form, maybe time to drop him.

Essex 46-1 v Leicestershire (Essex need 169 more runs to win)

Rehan Ahmed is handed the ball for the ninth over - and immediately makes things interesting.

He spends the over bowling round the wicket to the left-handed Paul Walter and has a couple of lbw appeals knocked back - the second, in particular, was a vociferous shout. The ball kept low and gripped, perhaps turning too much and past leg stump.

A maiden to begin with for Rehan which, considering the first eight overs went for 46, was a welcome stemming of the flow of runs.

Worried about the Essex run chase. Dean Elgar has been in no form this year and gone already. I think we’re the cricket equivalent of Spurs - though Essexy sounds a bit dubious!

David, Whitley Bay (exiled from my birth county)

Re George 14:16. Hmm. As captain you have to balance the benefits of enforcing a follow on with the fact that your bowlers are tired and would welcome a rest plus, if your opponents bat well, you have to score the winning runs batting last on a wearing wicket.

    Ali c Ogborne b Overton 1 (Notts 193 & 166 v Somerset 310 & 355-7 dec)

    Craig OvertonImage source, Shutterstock

It's all over at Trent Bridge and Nottinghamshire have lost in the County Championship for the first time in 13 months.

Mohammad Ali tries to hook a short one from Craig Overton but it spoons straight up to Alfie Ogborne at square leg to take a simple catch and Overton ends with a five-for.

An excellent victory for Somerset who have been the better side in every aspect of the game from start to finish.

That is a first home defeat since May 2024 for the defending champions.

Jordan Hermann scored a century in the first innings for Somerset, supported by 50s for Thomas Rew and Archie Vaughan.

Skipper Lewis Gregory did some fine work with the ball to take 4-51 before suffering an injury to be replaced by Jake Ball.

A maiden ton for 18-year-old T Rew was perhaps the headline act in the match, ending unbeaten on 127 when Somerset declared with a lead of 472 in their second innings.

Overton has then gone on to take five wickets to help bowl Notts out for 166 in their second innings and leave the home side a whopping 306 runs short.

    Taylor c Vasconcelos b Weatherall 11 (Northants 465 v Glos 268 & 340-9)

Gone. A rising delivery from Raphy Weatherall and Matt Taylor feathers through to Ricardo Vasconcelos, who is wearing his keeping pads inside his trousers.

Taylor hung around for 59 balls but number 11 Will Williams is now out there with James Bracey. The lead is 143.

    Northants 465 v Glos 268 & 337-8

BBC Radio Northampton's Andrew Radd ponders the wisdom of turning to spin as another Liam Guthrie over concludes with one run added by Gloucestershire.

Not just yet, as Raphy Weatherall will continue, with the visitors 140 in front.

    The breakthrough Yorkshire needed.

Dom Bess floats one into Beau Webster and gets turn. Webster gets an inside edge and plays on.

Five more wickets needed by Yorkshire with 52 overs to go.

    Brookes c Falconer b Gohar 0 (Worcs 265 & 155-7 v Middx 339 & 283-6)

Another one! With fielders around the bat Ethan Brookes tries to sweep the spin of Zafar Gohar and is caught in the deep by Caleb Falconer.

Earlier Henry Cullen took a single off Gohar to avoid the pair on first class debut but Worcestershire are under big pressure now.

  10. Postpublished at 14:30 BST 15 June

Essex 36-1 v Leicestershire (Essex need 179 more runs to win)

This is a positive start made by Essex, despite the loss of Dean Elgar for nine.

Time is off the essence, the run rate required floating around 3.5 per over and the top order have decided they will try and reduce the target as quickly as they can inside these opening six overs.

Paul Walter (15 not out) has been joined by Tom Westley (10 not out), who has begun his own innings quickly.

    Notts 164-9 v Somerset - target 473

A chance for a run out to seal the victory for Somerset as Fergus O'Neill taps it to cover from Jake Ball and goes for a quick single but Mohammad Ali says no.

O'Neill has to turn back halfway down but Alfie Ogborne fumbles it and cannot get the throw in quickly.

If Ogborne had got that in first time, that was it.

    Notts 164-9 v Somerset - target 473

And now Fergus O'Neill does at least go through to his 50 for Notts before what seems likely to be an almost inevitable defeat to Somerset.

O'Neill flicks it down to the long leg boundary for four and his 50 has come about in 94 balls.

  13. Postpublished at 14:25 BST 15 June

    Notts 160-9 v Somerset - target 473

Fergus O'Neill is 48* and is getting plenty of opportunities to take singles to edge towards 50 but is turning them down in favour of staying on strike.

    Notts 160-9 v Somerset - target 473

Craig Overton attempts a shorter delivery to Mohammad Ali but it's a long way down the legside and Thomas Rew hasn't got a hope of getting near it.

It will go down as byes, which is a bit harsh on Rew.

One more wicket needed for Somerset. They'll want it sooner rather than later.

  15. Hain resistancepublished at 14:23 BST 15 June

    Warks 263 & 163-4 v Yorks 469 & 246-6 dec

Sam Hain has now seen off a hundred deliveries, scoring 30 runs, as he leads Warwickshire's resistance.

Yorkshire need something to happen as this is in danger of drifting away from them.

So, with specialist bowler Jake Ball replacing all-rounder Gregory, maybe Notts could replace Ali with Verreynne instead? Actually, seeing the abysmal batting performance from the 'real' batters, maybe not...

    Notts 154-9 v Somerset - target 473

Will Fergus O'Neill at least be able to get to his 50 for Notts? He's probably one of the only Notts players who will come out of this game with credit in the bank.

O'Neill took 6-72 in Somerset's first innings and scored 21 with the bat in the first innings for Notts.

    He's 46 not out here.

    Waite b Morgan 8 (Worcs 265 & 154-6 v Middx 339 & 283-6)

Middlesex are suddenly sprinting towards the winning post.

Three wickets have have fallen in nine overs since lunch.

Matthew Waite can't produce one of his match saving innings this time as he's bowled by Sebastian Morgan.

    Four more needed for Middlesex.

    Josh Davey does the trick!

Fresh from his important knock of 21 with the bat earlier, he makes the breakthrough with the ball for Leicestershire.

Having been driven for four by Dean Elgar, he then turns the left-hander round and finds the shoulder of the bat. Rishi Patel awaits at first slip and takes a comfortable catch.

Tom Westley come to the middle.
