Nottinghamshire are not used to losing many County Championship cricket matches in recent times.

The champions lost just once on their way to the title last season - away at Durham in May 2025 - and are undefeated so far in 2026.

You have to go back just over two years for the last time Notts suffered defeat on home soil, losing against Hampshire at Trent Bridge in May 2024.

But Somerset are just seven wickets away from what would be a memorable win that would help them leapfrog Notts in the table despite starting the match six places lower, such is the tight nature of Division One.

Teenager Thomas Rew's unbeaten maiden first-class ton (127*) helped Somerset build an almost unassailable lead of 473 before they declared yesterday evening.

Notts lost Ben Slater, Freddie McCann and nightwatchman Brett Hutton in an 18-over stint last night and with a perhaps unrealistic 426 still to knock off, will likely aim to bat all day today to try and avoid defeat.

  3. Essex three wickets away from victory chasepublished at 10:51 BST 15 June

Defiant Leicestershire will aim to set Essex as many as they can for victory on day four of the County Championship match at Grace Road.

Leicestershire are 326-7 at the resumption of play, leading their visitors by only 112, with three wickets in hand - but they still have the experienced Lewis Hill (64 not out) at the crease.

Joined by Tom Scriven (one not out) in the middle this morning, Hill and the tail will be looking to put as many runs on the board as are possible, in order to give themselves a chance to bowl at Essex's top order and make in-roads.

Hill said last night: “I think we've done really well. It would have been very easy to kind of just give in with how far we were behind but I think we've put ourselves in a real good position to go again tomorrow. If we can get through that first session I think it can be a really interesting final day.

“That first half-hour is going to be very important. Hopefully me and Tom Scriven can get our heads down, put as many runs on the board as possible and get to a target that we can defend."

  4. Delayed start at Wantage Roadpublished at 10:48 BST 15 June

    Northants 465 v Glos 268 & 264-7

Unfortunately, there's been a bit of rain about in Northamptonshire this morning and play will not begin as scheduled at 11:00.

Let's hope the hold-up won't last long as we are in for a potentially exciting finish in this game.

Gloucestershire lead by 67, with James Bracey and Daz Ahmed the not out batsmen.

  5. Postpublished at 10:46 BST 15 June

A sad bit of news to bring you this morning following the death of former Derbyshire and England fast bowler Alan Ward at the age of 78.

Born in Dronfield, he took 460 first-class wickets at an average of 22.61 between 1966 and 1978, spending his final two seasons with Leicestershire.

He made his Test debut against New Zealand at Lord's in July 1969 and played five matches in total, taking 14 wickets.

  6. Battle for survival for Bears?published at 10:43 BST 15 June

Taking the wicket of Rob Yates before the close of day three was a big boost for Yorkshire.

They need nine more on the final day to secure their third win of the season and reverse last month's defeat at Edgbaston.

Wickets haven't been easy to come by in this match and it took Yorkshire 95 overs to bowl the opposition out in the first innings.

All-rounder George Hill, who claimed the wicket of Yates, warns his team may need to take their time.

"It's obviously spinning and hopefully it gets a bit worse and goes up and down. It's a touch slower than it has been here in the past," he acknowledged.

"We've not got to strive for it and be patient."

Warwickshire need 409 more runs but realistically it's about a battle for survival for the Bears. It's cold and cloudy but dry in Scarborough this morning.

  7. Middlesex need eight wicketspublished at 10:40 BST 15 June

    Worcs 265 & 33-2 v Middx 339 & 263-6 dec

The Middlesex players may have been a bit alarmed when they woke up to rain in Worcester this morning, but it soon stopped and no more is forecast today.

So Leus du Plooy's team should have all day - if they need it - to secure their third win of the season which would lift them into the top half of the second division table.

There's always been something in this New Road pitch and the way Zafar Gohar's delivery spat up onto Daniel Lategan's glove for the second wicket just before the close of day three will have encouraged the away bowlers.

Worcestershire need 325 more runs to win and captain Brett D'Oliveira is refusing to give up.

"We'll turn up full of faith and try to chase the total down," he declared.

"It's the sort of pitch where something doesn't happen for a period of time and then all of a sudden something happens that's quite extravagant.

"Someone's got to be a hero and try to knock those runs off."

  8. Glos 'still fighting' at Wantage Roadpublished at 10:36 BST 15 June

    Northants 465 v Gloucestershire 268 & 264-7

    Daz AhmedImage source, Shutterstock

Gloucestershire's Daz Ahmed believes they are still in with a chance of victory despite being made to follow on by Northants.

They will resume their second innings 67 runs ahead, with only three wickets standing, but James Bracey is still there on 75 not out.

Ahmed has contributed 28 to an eighth-wicket stand of 43 and said: "We’re still fighting. There’s a lot of time left and we really believe we can still put ourselves in a position to have a go at the back end.

"He [Bracey] is batting really well at the minute. I’ve always seen myself as a capable batter and we’ve still got two guys who are more than capable as well, so between us we believe we can get a score on the board we can have a crack at tomorrow."
