Have your say on England men this summer

These are tough batting conditions and in isolation the cricket would be entertaining, but this all feels a bit flat here after everything. The ground is half full. We won't see Ben Stokes again, despite the big tribute to him on the screens before play.

That run out of Joe Root just typifies England in this Test match. Backs against the wall, a realistic target in a day and we lose out best batter and probably only hope of salvaging anything to a silly single. Embarrassing to say the least.

    Russell, Northampton

Pathetic, this team are a disgrace.

    Colin, North Yorkshire

    Non-stop brainless cricket.

    John, Abertawe

    Target 373

Jamie Smith with a couple of boundaries off Nathan Smith - thrashing through the covers before guiding one through the cordon.

Smith realising there's a probably a ball with his name on it, perhaps.

Joe Root has been run out nine times in Test cricket, the most by any England batter.

But the last time he run out in Test cricket was in January 2021 vs Sri Lanka in Galle where he scored 186 off 495 balls.

This is the frustration. Jamie Smith can play. Daryl Mitchell faced 240 balls, he worn a few.

The license to swing the willow without consequence. This is the story of this Test team for a while now.

Harry Brook is the world number one Test player. It's just unacceptable.

    Target 373

Gus Atkinson joins Jamie Smith at the crease and keeps out five dots after the latter picks up a single off the first ball of Will O'Rourke's over.

There's too many day five demons lurking in this surface so with arch occupier Joe Root gone England might be best throwing the bat and hoping they get lucky now.

It's an incredible piece of fielding from Henry Nicholls. It was a brilliant pick-up, almost sliding as he releases it.

Root run out (Nicholls) 18 (Eng 116-6)

Quite breathtaking fielding from Henry Nicholls.

Jamie Smith pokes it to point, sets off, and calls Joe Root through for a single.

Nicholls is on the turf sliding on his knees, gathers, and despite falling backwards spins his body round and hits one stump with his shy.

This is going to be tight, I think he might be run out! Joe Root's given himself out - that's a calamity!

Daft singles aren't going to help England's cause, mind.

Joe Root looks like he is struggling to make his ground at the striker's end after some brilliant fielding by Henry Nicholls.

Root is walking off. He knows he's toast. The umpire's will check it.

I feel for Emilio Gay, moving down to number six from opening. What is that going to do to him?

Jamie Smith will now come out. Can I use the word swinging? I think he will come out with the intent to get this scoreboard ticking.

You can see how wide Nathan Smith is coming on the crease to try hit the cracks.

  13. Eng 116-5published at 18.3 overs

Jamie Smith the new batter and he's given an early examination from Nathan Smith who is right in the business end of this day five pitch.

Truthfully, England are going to have to bat out of their skins to last much beyond lunch based on the first few overs this morning.

Some away movement from Nathan Smith, who has been so persistent. I think Emilio Gay was unsettled by the ball in the previous over that flew from nowhere. It was all a bit tentative.

    Gay c Blundell b Smith 10 (Eng 116-5)

    Emilio Gay nicks off.

Nathan Smith has bowled with real menace this morning and gets New Zealand's first wicket of the morning with a beauty from round the wicket.

Gay has to play to a full delivery angled into his off stump from Smith which then straightens a touch off the seam and it takes the edge.

  16. Eng 112-4published at 18 overs

Will O'Rourke fizzes a delivery into the pitch, wide of stump inducing a drive from Joe Root which misses, and a chunk of the surface breaks off prompting the England batter to do a bit of gardening.

A short wide delivery from O'Rourke from is latched upon by Root who waspishly cuts it to the fence four.

Oh my word! That's flown off a length. If that was straight, that would've cleaned him up. An absolutely brutal ball.

  18. Eng 110-4published at 17 overs

A rasping, simply unplayable, delivery from Nathan Smith to Emilio Gay which climbed into the England batter from just back of a length.

Gay stumbles away like a seasick passenger getting off a ferry after a particularly rough crossing.

Smith follows it up with one which beats the defensive prod of Gay.

    A maiden for Smith.

It will all be over by lunch. I won’t be spending my money to watch England for quite a while.

That's an unsual approach from Joe Root first ball. He normally would've left that delivery.
