Ben Stokes, fantastic England captain and player but am I the only one who thinks he was selfish yesterday? Put himself ahead of the Test. He knew he would be unlikely to bat until the fifth day so announced early to ensure full crowd and blaze of glory. Test lost.

    Simon, London

  2. Eng 156-6published at 30 overs

    Target 373

A reminder this is a record fourth-innings chase for England at Trent Bridge, which would eclipse their 298 chased in 2022.

Mitchell Santner starts to find a bit of turn off the pitch to Jamie Smith who defends the Kiwi left-arm spinner.

I can smell a leading edge coming into play here.

It's been a fantastic pitch. Good for batting on the first couple of days then after you've had to bat very well for your runs.

  4. Eng 155-6published at 29 overs

Jamie Smith drives Zak Foulkes crisply for a couple to deep cover.

A punch off the back foot through extra cover brings the England wicketkeeper two more.

Watched Test cricket for 31 years and have never felt so ashamed of and disconnected to an England team. Total reset needed. Ben Stokes should not be the only one leaving today.

    Steve, Haywards Heath

England's brainless style of play has been worked out, and now we are seeing the consequences against a decent, but not amazing New Zealand team. It's taken nothing special to win this match for NZ, just some common sense and proper Test cricket.

    George, Ratho

Having spent a lot of money, watching this allegedly entertaining team, over the past few years I will not be spending anymore until Rob Key, Brendon McCullum and the whole set up is changed. Depressing and shambolic!

    Matt, Tring

  6. drinks break

England 151-6 at drinkspublished at 28 overs

Just a single off Mitchell Santner's over, from the bat of Jamie Smith, takes England to drinks.

  7. Eng 150-6published at 27 overs

A maiden from Zak Foulkes is kept out by Gus Atkinson.

England have settled down a little here.

Mitchell Santner hasn't bowled particularly well in this game after his return to red ball cricket.

Mitchell Santner is a good one-day bowler so you'd think he'd be able to hit length. But he's really struggled.

  10. Eng 150-6published at 26 overs

Mitchell Santner, who went wicketless in the first innings en route to 0-59, is summoned by Tom Latham.

Jamie Smith thrashes the Kiwi spinner's second delivery for four through point.

Santner's next, though, just skims past the hands of short leg.

  11. Eng 140-6published at 25 overs

Nathan Smith with a tight over, just a single conceded off it which keeps Jamie Smith on strike.

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

In Jamie Smith's first 13 Tests he scored 1,056 runs, averaging 55, with a strike-rate of 77. That was up to the third Test against India last summer.

In the nine Tests since then, the final two against India, five against Australia and two in this series, he's scored 280 runs, averaging 18.6 with just the one half-century.

Nathan Smith has bowled 10.5 overs, England have faced 22.5 overs.

It tells you that New Zealand are pretty short on resources.

  14. Eng 139-6published at 24 overs

Tom Blundell is stood up to the stumps, offering plenty of encouragement to a New Zealand attack which is being held together with sticking plasters.

Gus Atkinson is able to pick up a couple of runs by working Zak Foulkes into the leg side.

In the first 20 overs, England's seamers attacked the stumps with 12% of their deliveries, compared to New Zealand's 9%.

What New Zealand focused on instead was hitting a good line and length. New Zealand's seamers bowled 44% of their deliveries on a good line and length, compared to England's 33% in this match.

  16. Eng 137-6published at 23 overs

You can hear the voices of the New Zealand players echoing around Trent Bridge with a subdued hush around the ground as England slide to what looks an inevitable defeat here.

Nathan Smith beats the edge of Jamie Smith's bat with a wee bit of nip away to boot. The England wicketkeeper plays out the rest of the over competently/

It looks like Will O'Rourke's left hamstring.

We've had no Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry in this Test, not much O'Rourke in this second innings. They've found a resilience, New Zealand.

  19. Eng 133-6published at 22 overs

Zak Foulkes bowls two dots to complete the rest of the over.

  20. Eng 133-6published at 21.4 overs

Will O'Rouke gets one to jag back sharply to Gus Atkinson and it beats everyone to race away for four byes.

Atkinson nearly chops on to Will O'Rourke later in the over.

O'Rourke is struggling with an injury. A hamstring, or knee perhaps, and walks off the ground with two balls left of the over.
