    And, of course, one finally goes to hand and it's put down.

    Dan Lawrence skips down the pitch to Khurram Shahzad and flicks the ball straight to the fielder at mid-wicket. It's hit firmly but straight to him at a comfortable height, and Shan Masood puts it down.

    England think very highly of Bethell (understandably). How many runs does Jordan Cox have to score to go ahead of him as first choice number three? He's looked very good in both innings so far this series.

    Another loose drive, another leading edge... but another lands safely, this time from Jordan Cox.

    You can understand England's desire to be positive and try to throw the bowlers off their length, considering how much it's nipping around, but the risks that come with it are clear.

    Frustration for Pakistan though - they are bowling well but nothing's going to hand.

    Edged... and four!

    A streaky drive from Dan Lawrence, poking at the ball with very little control, but he gets lucky as it flies past third slip.

    Still plenty for the seamers to work with out there.

  5. Muhammad Abbas can't bowl yet, because he was off the field for a period of time before lunch, and I'm sure Pakistan captain Babar Azam will be desperate to bring him back on as soon as he can.

    He exploited the conditions perfectly this morning.

    A watchful start from Dan Lawrence, leaving a few through to the keeper, before he drives sweetly through the covers for a couple.

    Looks like these two are going to be positive to try and combat the bowler-friendly conditions.

    A big opportunity for Jordan Cox. Any selector or captain takes note of anyone who scores runs when other people aren't. He is a very sweet timer of the ball.

    I'm very confident that the England bowlers can match whatever the Pakistan bowlers can do on this pitch. Robinson's sort of pitch, another bag of wickets on offer for him.

    Beautifully played.

    Jordan Cox finds the boundary with a Joe Root-esque back foot punch, before driving firmly down the ground for three.

    A costly over from Khurram Shahzad, certainly not how Pakistan would've wanted to set the tone after lunch.

    Pakistan were spot on with their lines in the first session with 32% deliveries in line with the stumps, and 18% projected to hit the stumps.

    Since 2006, no team has been been as accurate as Pakistan in an opening session of a Test match at Lord's in the ball-tracking era.

    Dan Lawrence has played well for Surrey this year, so this is a big game for him to establish himself in the England side.

    Every now and then, it is a good thing to get your team out of a hole.

    This is a good chance for Lawrence.

  13. There's been plenty of seam movement for the Pakistan bowlers to work with - their challenge now is to back that up for another session.

    It'll be interesting to see how England approach it, and whether Jordan Cox and Dan Lawrence think that being aggressive is the best way to go in these conditions.

    Really glad Pakistan have come back fighting in this Test. They were poor last week and rightly criticised for it. If England can grind out 250, we might just be in for a cracker of a Test match.

  15. Harry Brook and Jordan Cox led a quick recovery from 36-3, but Pakistan's seamers held their nerve to Brook in his attempts to counter-attack and he was bowled for 15 just before lunch.

    Cox has remained positive, though, and will resume on 27 from 29 balls after the break.

  16. Muhammad Abbas has been the main man for Pakistan this morning - he has figures of 3-34 and took his 900th first-class wicket in the process.

    Emilio Gay was the first to fall, caught down the leg side for eight, before Ben Duckett and Joe Root were pinned lbw for 17 and four respectively.

    Pakistan will know that their work isn't done yet. You would say a par score on this surface is just over 200. Pakistan know they have a lot of work to do to get the six wickets of England.

  18. Anyway, if you're feeling a little worried about this start, England were bowled out for 140 in the first innings against New Zealand at this ground back in June.

    And they won by 115 runs...

    Already looking like a very important toss to win. Weather-wise, it's still pretty grey and gloomy at Lord's but certainly far better than we were expecting.
