This is hostile stuff from Archer, late in the day.

  3. NZ 243-5published at 63 overs

Jofra Archer ups the ante a bit at The Oval.

The penultimate delivery of the England quick's over is brutish bouncer which forces Glenn Phillips to bob out the way.

Four byes off Tom Blundell's thigh pad off the final ball of the over.

After a few years of 2-3 day Tests, it's really nice to see a balanced Test match! Hopefully it continues and goes the distance!

    Joe, Yorkshire

Lack of a spinner is now looking like the wrong decision to me. All the same now so the batters aren't being given a fresh challenge

    Geoff Noden, Manchester

Silly to field first, psychologically they start behind and physically it must be best to bat before a harrowing time in the field.

    Adrian Wilson, Peterborough

I will reiterate that is the 29th first-class match in a row at The Oval where the winners of the toss have chosen to field.

Glenn Phillips is comfortably the highest run scorer in the series, but he's been far from risk free - his false shot percentage, 30%, is identical to Kane Williamson's in the first Test, who managed 18 runs for twice out.

  6. NZ 238-5published at 62 overs

England are meandering a little here.

Matt Fisher through another over which troubles neither Glenn Phillips nor Tom Blundell.

13 overs since tea and 72 runs for New Zealand.

The pitch is doing what it tends to do, getting easier and easier to bat on.

  8. NZ 234-5published at 61 overs

Jofra Archer back into the fray for England.

Unsurprisingly, given he's not played a red-ball match since the Ashes, he has bowled the fewest overs of England's pace attack.

A bit more respect show by Glenn Phillips, who picks up a couple off Archer's first delivery, but finds fewer scoring opportunities in the remainder of the over.

You have to be careful with Glenn Phillips. You look down, then all of a sudden he's built a score.

  10. NZ 232-5published at 60 overs

Matt Fisher nips one back into the inside thigh of Glenn Phillips, and England appeal for lbw.

Not out is the verdict from the umpire.

Fisher is doing his best to persuade Joe Root but the England skipper is shaking his head and indicates it was too high.

The television replay shows it would have been umpire's call had Root gone for the review.

Salt in the wound as Phillips hammers Fisher for four through point.

Where's England's next wicket coming from here?

England just don't want to let their foot off the gas here.

  12. NZ 227-5published at 59 overs

Tom Blundell with a nice opening of the face now to Sonny Baker, using the pace to guide it between second slip and gully for four.

A few of the crowd at The Oval flagging now in the early evening sunshine after a lemonade, or three.

No sign of Joe Root turning his arm over just yet.

It might be time for a bit of Joe Root, then?

    Jeremy Coney
Former New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

If we look at both sides, there isn't really any frontline spinner to choose from.

  15. NZ 222-5published at 58 overs

A run-out chance after Tom Blundell sets off for a single, after jabbing Matt Fisher into the pitch, but is set back by Glenn Phillips.

Jacob Bethell's throw to the striker's end flashes past the stumps as Blundell dives to make his ground.

England, of course, have not picked an out-and-out spinner for this match.

    Ben Jones

Tom Blundell has batted very deep in his crease, with an average impact point 1.6m from his stumps - the latest of any Kiwi batter.

    Phil Tufnell
Former England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Glenn Phillips is looking to get on with it a bit here. He's trying to give some counterattack because England have been spot on in the first two sessions, just restricting the runs.

  18. NZ 222-5published at 57 overs

Sonny Baker's economy rate is creeping up.

Glenn Phillips thrashes another freebie wide of off stump through point for four.

How will Joe Root respond to this Kiwi counterattack?

    Andy Zaltzman

There has been no half centuries yet for New Zealand in this series.

  20. NZ 216-5published at 56 overs

Bit of counterattacking innings from Glenn Phillips this.

Stand and deliver from the Kiwi batter as he biffs Josh Tongue straight back past the England bowler's ankles for four.
