  1. NZ 280-7published at 74 overs

The hulking figure of Kyle Jamieson arrives at the crease, defending the last two balls of Jacob Bethell's over.

Jofra Archer is demanding another over, the eighth of his spell, and who is Joe Root to argue?

The only good thing about that was the catch. I've enjoyed the cricket today, it's been of a good standard. That was not a good standard.

Smith was being too careful with that. Really, he could've knocked it where ever he wanted.

Jacob Bethell is delirious with excitement. That was a good catch, a horrible ball to get a wicket with.

  4. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 73.4 overs

    Smith c Cox b Bethell 4 (NZ 280-7)

Another New Zealand wicket chucked away...

Jacob Bethell sends down a full toss to Nathan Smith, who tries to sweep and toe-ends high behind the keeper.

Jordan Cox makes good ground running back and takes the catch over his shoulder.

Two wickets now for the part-timer, who's finding this pretty funny.

We've not seen as much movement as I would've expected here, especially considering it's the first day. But, it does look like a second day pitch.

  6. NZ 278-6published at 73 overs

Nathan Smith gets through three balls without scoring, then can relax as Jofra Archer fires five wides down the leg side.

He gets off strike from the follow-up ball, taking a single into the leg side before Glenn Phillips offers defensive shots to the last two deliveries of the over.

It will be Jofra Archer for the seventh over of his spell!

Nathan Smith, get ready to do some swaying.

Great to see two Somerset youngsters playing International stuff. We keep producing them down west but very few make it to this level.

    Frank, Wilts

I mean really, when are those in charge going to do something about the over rates in Test cricket? This is now the eight hours that they should have played and we're 20 overs behind! It's embarrassing and nonsense, and something has to be done.

    Paul, Taunton

What's the point in bowling bouncers to someone whose just going to duck out of the way everytime, someone needs to have a word with Jofra Archer and tell him to use his brain and not just his pace.

I wonder if Jofra Archer has got another over left in him. He is bowling well, straight and aggressive.

Fair play to Phillips for sticking it out though, he's taken a few hits.

  10. NZ 272-6published at 72 overs

Ouch - Nathan Smith pulls Jacob Bethell's first delivery straight onto the legs of Emilio Gay at short leg. Some leg pads are belatedly brought out - a bit late for those.

Having not scored from his first 12 balls, Ben Duckett drops deep at cover to allow Smith a single.

Another over of Archer - might he fancy a go at the New Zealand number eight?

  11. NZ 271-6published at 71 overs

Glenn Phillips guides the second ball of Jofra Archer's over out to backward point for four, ending a run of 27 consecutive dot balls delivered to him by the England seamer.

Archer plants one on Phillips' turned shoulder with his following delivery, and the New Zealand batter can't score off the rest of the over - all short balls.

Most probably the end of Jofra Archer today - he has figures of 1-48 from 17 overs today, with four maidens.

  12. NZ 267-6published at 70 overs

Jacob Bethell rattles through a maiden to Nathan Smith.

He'll be happy to be at the non-striker's end for the next over, because Jofra Archer is going to steam in again...

Glenn Phillips found that short-ball barrage a lot funnier than I would have.

Jofra Archer gets a big cheer down at deep square leg. That’s probably the end of his spell. Plenty of effort and threat without nabbing that wicket.

  14. NZ 267-6published at 67 overs

Time for more short stuff from Jofra Archer.

Glenn Phillips, still in shades, is getting peppered again - he twice hits the deck, dropping to his knees the first time and then dramatically falling forward, then landing on his back after the last ball of the over.

He sticks his thumb to either show he's alright, or perhaps in appreciation of Archer's bowling.

A maiden, although Archer fired one down the leg side for four byes that won't count against his figures.

That was Jacob Bethell's fifth Test wicket.

  17. NZ 263-6published at 68 overs

Nathan Smith arrives at number eight.

Jacob Bethell strikes his pad with the final ball of the over and goes up for a big appeal... nothing from the umpire.

The first over of spin of the series ends with just the one wicket.

It came off the inside edge of the bat, it's a great catch by Root. I can't believe Blundell has done that. He's probably thinking the same.

It's a good pitch where you'd expect at least one of your top six to go out there and get 100. There's hardly any movement.

    Simon Mann

It wasn't a particulaly good ball but it was not a bad catch actually, above his head. Root was the main man there really.

That was another gift really. There's been some soft dismissals today.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 67.4 overs

    Blundell c Root b Bethell 51 (NZ 263-6)

    51 and out!

Jacob Bethell's part-time spin takes a wicket in its first over.

Two balls after reaching his half-century, Tom Blundell chips a ball to short mid-wicket, where Joe Root parries the ball in the air at the top of his leap and then takes it comfortably on the way down.

New Zealand have chucked a few wickets away today.
