Brilliant delivery from Lauren Filer. Verma just fishing outside the off stump and it's well taken by Amy Jones.

That was a god ball. 72mph, it's no surprise really, just a little too quick that time.

The seamer aggressively chews her gum - looking like she means business - and bowls a beautiful delivery which shapes into Shafali Verma who goes fishing. A thick edge and Amy Jones takes a smart catch down to her right.

And now we have the first runs as Smriti Mandhana pushes into the covers for two.

A fuller delivery on the legs is whipped off the pads as Mandhana picks up another single.

Shafali Verma - a big hitter in limited-overs cricket - unconvincingly chases at a wider delivery.

I'm going to go with Nat's intuition on this pitch. She's played plenty of cricket and more Test matches than me (zero) to know what conditions are like.

  5. Ind 0-0published at 0.1 overs

The first ball for a women's Test at Lord's is a play and a miss as Smriti Mandhana flirts with one outside off.

There will be plenty of firsts which players can dine out on for the rest of their careers.

Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma are in the middle.

It is Lauren Bell to open the bowling, with Mandhana on strike.

    Here we go.

They would have practised in the lead up to this game. Holding a red ball and a white ball here is slightly different. I am interested to see which end they bowl from though.

I'd like to see Lauren Bell from the pavilion end with the slope, coming in to the right handed batters, if you can get the ball the move away, it's really effective.

I know it's for workload reasons but sad to see Charlie Dean miss out on such an occasion. She will be the next great England captain.

    Elly, Devon

So is there a reason that Charlie Dean wasn’t in the squad or is it the old managing her workload?

And we’re off. India played a Test match 126 days ago, but for England it has been a 526-day wait to re-don the whites.

Why, oh WHY bowl first, in this heat! Utter madness

    Graham, Woking

That's... not a good choice. Yes, the sun will be out for 4 days, but if the men's test is anything to go by, batting last on a Lords pitch feels like something to avoid at all costs.

England's decision to bowl first took me by surprise. Judging by those of you getting in touch, plenty others feel the same.

Richard, I'm equally jealous. Thankfully, BBC Sport HQ in Salford has working air conditioning.

The players - dressed in crisp white - stand upright for the national anthems as the flags flutter nicely in North West London.

My girlfriend has corporate hospitality at Lord's today with work, while I'm working in a swelteringly hot room. Very grateful for TMS and the live text, but they're barely easing the intense jealousy...

Nat Sciver-Brunt said that all she wants from the team is to take in the moment and the occasion.

Of course, once the ball is in the opening bowler's hands, it will be straight into game mode.

The iconic Long Room is packed with excited cricket fans ready to witness history. They give a huge round of applause as the players make their way to the field.

England's women played their first ODI at Lord's in 1976 and members of that team are on the outfield and about to ring the bell.

    This is a special moment.

It's a great opportunity for players to get a five-fer or a century and get their name onto the honors board so they'll be here forever.

India captain Hamanpreet Kaur: "It's a great opportunity to set a total on the board and let's see how it goes.

"It's a very big achievement playing first test at Lord's and we're really excited about it.

"We have spent a good of time in the nets and done everything we need to do."

England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt: "We're going to have a bowl. The most we can get out of the wicket with the bowlers is now. The sun is going to be out the whole time."

"I'm looking forward to get out there as a team. We had a couple days at home for people to have some relax time, recharging. We're stood here on such a special occasion. There's two debutants, [Alice] Capsey and Mady [Villiers] will make their debut."
