I scoffed at England's decision to bowl in this weather. Maybe just maybe, international cricket captains and coaches with years of experience are better qualified than me to make these decisions...

    Ben, Clent

I think it's brilliant that the ladies are playing at the "Home of Cricket". They shouldn't be disheartened by the loss to Australia - there's no shame losing to the very best team in the world.

In the last Test England played in England, Sophie Ecclestone bowled 77 overs.

Her workload over the next couple of days could be quite extensive.

England's bowlers look tired, and that's not surprising considering the emotions of a World Cup final less than a week ago, and how busy they've been over the past six weeks.

It's a smart plan from India to attack Sophie Ecclestone. If they can knock her out of the attack, that'll give Nat Sciver-Brunt a proper headache.

With such a heavy off side field here, it's not allowing Ecclestone to bowl at the stumps.

Wallop. Smriti Mandhana is down on one knee and slog-sweeps Sophie Ecclestone for six.

Time for drinks. England look pleased to be having a bit of a breather.

It's been an eventful morning session so far. India are going at almost six an over but there have been moments of joy for England. This was a cracking delivery.

Over the past ten years, Smriti Mandhana has been the most attacking batter on the first morning of a Test. 50% of her shots have been of an attacking nature this early on in the match.

Highest attacking shot percentage on the first morning of a Test match in the last 10 years:

    • Smriti Mandhana (India) 50%
    • Ellyse Perry (Australia) 45%
    • Beth Mooney (Australia) 44%
    • Lauren Winfield-Hill (England) 34%
    • Shafali Verma (India) 33%

Jemimah Rodrigues is not shy of playing her shots.

Issy Wong is introduced into the attack and offers up a half-volley. Rodrigues is onto it like a flash.

Poor from Wong. A full toss on the leg stump and Smriti Mandhana sends it racing to the boundary.

    Nine from the over.

It feels like, in this heat, Sophie Ecclestone is going to have to do a lot of bowling.

Mady Villiers is the other spin option but she is an all-rounder, so it's unlikely she'll be plugged in to bowl from one end in the way that Ecclestone does.

That was England's selection dilemma between Villiers and Tilly Corteen-Coleman - having to choose between another frontline spinner and a long tail, or strengthening the batting.

Down the leg side and Smriti Mandhana helps herself to a single to bring up the 50 mark for India.

Jemimah Rodrigues finds her first boundary with stylish slap through point.

Four more - this time a more controlled cut through the same region.

Sophie Ecclestone is super excited by an lbw shout but England wisely decide not to review - replays show a thick inside edge off Rodrigues' bat.

This is Smriti Mandhana 300th national appearance for India. She's played in eight Tests, with this one being her ninth, 120 ODIs and 171 T20s.

I really like Mandhana as a player, she's always busy.

She's playing really aggressive, it gives Lauren Bell a chance to get after her.

  17. Ind 49-2published at 9 overs

New batter Jemimah Rodrigues is off the mark with a single, before Smriti Mandhana is beaten with one that jags away. Decent stuff from Lauren Bell.

Mandhana is on 32 off 31 balls.

If this Test is a success, can we make the case for more Tests being played in the Women's Ashes?

    Katie W, Redhill

What's frustrating is that there is clearly an appetite for Test cricket in England. Headingley got one test, Nottingham one Test. If you include this, London has three. If they put on more women's Tests, the crowds will come, especially with a dearth of northern Test matches in the men's game.

The wayward bowling from Lauren Bell may have lured Yastika Bhatia into some complacency, but it really was a lovely delivery which would have troubled even the most settled of batters.

Smriti Mandhana swivels on the spot to pull Lauren Filer through mid-wicket for consecutive boundaries.

Lauren Bell has found 2.5º of swing this morning.

Since ball-tracking data has been available, this is the second most swing a seamer has had with the new ball in the first session of the first day of a Test match.

The most was Bell bowling at Taunton in 2022 with her old action, swinging it the other way with an average of 3.2º.
