Just one ball in England's first seven overs would have hit the stumps.

Time for bed. Expect to wake up to Carse banging in another half tracker in six hours time.

One thing you hate as a fast bowler is getting driven.

Travis Head and Jake Weatherald really hang back and look for the cuts and the pulls.Try and slip one up to them and maybe try have your field a bit straighter as well.

  4. Aus 29-0published at 7 overs

Very good again from Jofra Archer, finding that bit of movement in to the left-handed Travis Head.

A maiden over. Will Ben Stokes stick with Brydon Carse at the other end?

Praying for a positive result at Adelaide - not least because I’m spending Christmas with my Australian brother-in-law.

Brydon Carse is a big, strong, bang-in bowler. If you have a new ball in your hand, why are you thinking about bowling it half way down?

  7. Aus 29-0published at 6 overs

Short again and while this one flicks up off the top edge and into the grille of Jake Weatherald's helmet, it's another no-ball.

The Australia opener is clearly fine as he crashes a wide half-volley to the fence to end the over.

I think we might be seeing an early bowling change after this start from Carse.

No value for short and wide I'm afraid. Both are small-ish batters and they're looking to hang back. That is their area.

That is poor execution from Brydon Carse, simple as that. Not in the right areas and you will get destroyed.

We might see an early Josh Tongue over.

  9. Aus 24-0published at 5.4 overs

    Oh dear.

Too short and much too wide from Brydon Carse. A gimme for Jake Weatherald, who crunches it through the off side.

And again. This time hit up and over backward point. Not the start England wanted.

A fuller ball follows, left by Weatherald and just whistles past off stump. More of that, please, Brydon.

A decent track. England have got to be patient. Plug away and don't try anything too funky or fancy. A bit of professional bowling to try hit the top of off stump.

It is such hard work touring. The skipper, Pat Cummins comes back, and Nathan Lyon comes back and Australia win the toss.

Blimey, oh blimey. Give us a break, but this is why touring away from home is so tough.

    Good over from Jofra Archer.

He's just cranking it up a touch pace-wise and is keeping a tight line to the two left-handers, avoiding offering any width.

    Just a single from it.

Pitch. It. Up. Brydon. You have the new ball. It’s swinging. You have to threaten the stumps a little.

    Tom, Esher

We really were spoilt with Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad opening the bowling for so many years. Their consistency with line and length in the opening bursts is something we’ve struggled with ever since they left the side.

Brydon Carse isn't a typical new ball bowler, and this may not be a great pair for him to bowl to.

He averages 38 against left-handers in Test cricket, but just 26 against right-handers.

  15. Aus 15-0published at 4 overs

Brydon Carse gets another one to swing back significantly to Travis Head and Ben Stokes brings in a leg gully.

But he's not in the game next ball as a short, wide one from Carse is crunched away through point for four by Head.

Carse comes back well with a couple of fuller, straighter deliveries but oversteps for the second time in his first two overs to add another to the Australia total.

Travis Head is one swing or slash away from a duck or a run of low scores. Trouble is… he could still have the luck and score 80-odd in the first 15 overs.

Travis Head has three hundreds in eight Tests in Adelaide. In the previous seven matches he has got 630-odd runs, averaging just under 80.

Good running from the Australia openers, rotating the strike nicely with two singles and a leg bye.

Jofra Archer switches to round the wicket to end the over but sees the ball slide harmlessly down leg.

This Test starting when it does helps converting to night shift times later this week. Can England's bowling find some bite and consistency? Can they bat sensibly? Intriguing. I will be with this Test every ball.

Brydon Carse has got to look to bowl a little fuller. It is not his natural length. Carse is a bit shorter. It is hooping a little bit, and there is a bit of swing.

It is a good start from Carse - he looks in a good rhythm.
