Josh Tongue is into the attack, replacing Brydon Carse, and he starts with a maiden.

Good pace and a decent line and length from round the wicket.

Time for drinks and, despite how it looked in the first few overs, a good first hour for England after Australia chose to bat first.

Top couple of overs for England. Brydon Carse is starting to learn his line and length. Archer is doing Archer things, I guess.

This is perfect for England. Jofra Archer is bowling quickly and that has been the downfall for Usman Khawaja in the past against pace.

  4. Aus 37-2published at 11 overs

England's fielders are up and about.

There are oohs and ahs as Jofra Archer fires one in straight to Marnus Labuschagne and a leading edges skews into the off side.

Three singles from the over. Will it be the last of Archer's spell?

Re. to Liam and Harry at 00:06 - Get back out of bed, get the strong coffee on and let’s get some belief back! I’m totally here for a long session, wickets and a bit of fun!

    Tom, Bury St Edmonds

We have played much better since Harry and Liam went to bed. Sĥhhhhh do not disturb them!

    Aly, Wickham

Quick, someone threaten to go to bed again!

That Crawley catch was not far away from the spot Jonathan Trott swooped to run out Simon Katich in the first over of the second Ashes Test in 2010.

Another famous bit of fielding to kickstart an England Ashes campaign? Maybe the most successful patch of turf for England fielders in away Ashes Tests?

  7. Aus 34-2published at 10 overs

You can add four balls and one run to those Usman Khawaja stats but it is a much better over from Brydon Carse.

This is an important period in the game with England have got those two quick wickets, they'll want to make further inroads while this new ball is still doing a bit.

Usman Khawaja is in for Australia, which gives me a chance to offer you two stats about how he has gone batting at four.

I know which of them I'm choosing to focus on...

That is magnificent. Go back to the last game when England dropped so many chances, but they have just taken a blinder.

Two wickets inside two overs. It wasn't a great delivery. What a great opportunity for England. Four down by lunch would be nice!

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 9.1 overs

    Head c Crawley b Carse 10 (Aus 33-2)

    Stunning from Zak Crawley!

Two quick wickets for England and both Australia openers are gone.

It's a full ball just outside off from Brydon Carse, Travis Head drives it firmly but Crawley dives at short cover and takes an incredible one-handed catch just an inch or so above the turf.

Things have changed very quickly after a less than ideal start for the tourists.

  14. Aus 33-1published at 9 overs

Jofra Archer has found a really nice rhythm here.

He welcomes Marnus Labuschagne to the crease with a full, fast delivery that he has to block then follows up with a quick bouncer.

Edge is found last ball but it doesn't carry to Joe Root at first slip.

That quick bouncer and it is on to Jake Weatherald too quickly.

The stare from Archer to Weatherald. England desperately needed that wicket.

That is a big lift because England were looking flat into this contest.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 8.2 overs

    Weatherald c Smith b Archer 18 (Aus 33-1)

    Breakthrough!

Well-directed bouncer from Jofra Archer. Quick and at the body.

Jake Weatherald is cramped and beaten for pace, and the ball loops up off the top edge to give Jamie Smith the simplest of catches.

    England needed that.

    Michael Vaughan

Brydon Carse is not a tone setter with the ball. He is not that kind of bowler. He is a hit-the-pitch kind of bowler. England desperately require the captain to get the ball in his hand.

Jofra Archer is bowling pretty quickly. Archer is your main strike bowler. The captain is having to think about the runs already.

That is a real heave from Jake Weatherald. He fancied it, but he would have been upset if he got a little nick on that.

  20. Aus 33-0published at 8 overs

Brydon Carse is given another over and draws a couple of plays and misses from Jake Weatherald...

Both some from wide deliveries that the opener tries to thrash to the boundary, nearly swinging himself off his feet on the first occasion.

After a single to mid-wicket, Travis Head adds two with a punch through the covers... and that's another no-ball as well.

Carse has gone for 27 from his first four overs.
