Mitchell Starc has now gone past Wasim Akram as the leading wicket-taker among left-arm pacers in Test history.

Harry Brook was his 415th wicket.

Akram - the only other left-armer with more than 400 - took 414.

I’m worried now. Ben Stokes needs to conjure the spirit of his ex Durham teammate Brigadier Block and just hang around for Joe Root.

Joe Root, wisely, has gone into watchful mode.

Its practically like starting your innings from scratch to some degree given the exaggerated change in conditions now the lights are on.

A single apiece for he and Ben Stokes will do for now.

You cannot take your eyes off of it here. There is something on every ball.

Everyone is on the edge of their seats and England after that terrible start have managed to dig themselves out of a hole.

    Can they carry that on?

Mitchell Starc is rocketing up the list of highest wicket-takers in England v Australia.

He is now joint 11th with 110 wickets, having taken 13 in two and a half days of cricket in this series.

The tricky element of facing the pink ball for England's batters here is picking up the seam. On a pink ball it's black and the glare of the floodlights on the ball makes it tough to see it.

Scott Boland has his head in his hands after Ben Stokes pushes forward and sees an edge fly through the cordon for four.

Next ball Stokes gets a freebie on his legs which he flicks fine for another boundary.

From this position you’d like to think we should get 400+, but I’m not counting my chickens!

Joe Root looks organised and determined as the skies at the Gabba start to turn a mixture of pink and yellow as the sun sets.

Root picks up a single off the final ball of Mitchell Starc's over to keep the strike.

England have such a great chance to bat so well here. They could bat into tomorrow and by the time they have the new ball in hand it could potentially be twilight time. That is the golden chance when you bat first and bat well.

Steve Smith's catch was his 62nd against England.

That sets a new record for a non-wicketkeeper. Greg Chappell had 61 catches in 35 Tests against England.

Smith now has 62 catches in 32 Tests

Harry Brook spat his chewing gum out and whacked it with his bat as he trudged off at the Gabba. Not sure if there's a mirror in the England dressing room at the Gabba, but he'll be taking a long hard look in it after he's peeling off his pads and gloves.

Mitchell Starc begins the second over of this spell with three dots.

Harry Brook has a knack for playing the worst shot at the worst time. No game awareness.

Mitchell Starc now has 415 Test wickets - the most of any left-arm seamer in the history of the game. He's overtaken Pakistan great Wasim Akram (414) with his three wickets at the Gabba.

Joe Root and Ben Stokes are defending against Scott Boland with more talk from the pink ball than a Parky chat show.

I don't want to join the Harry Brook pile-on, but the case for the defence is a bit of a weak one...

Harry Brook nicks off to the first ball he faces from Mitchell Starc in the twilight. England talk about identifying times to attack and times to absorb pressure. Talk is cheap. He's the vice-captain. Awful.

Oh, Harry... The way England have played in the last hour has got them right in control and Mitchell Starc has been waiting to come on.

Australia have waited, and waited, and within two balls, Harry Brook has played a monstrous drive and gifted Australia a wicket.

    The left-arm quick, Australia's under-the-lights-pink-ball maestro, strikes.

Harry Brook is tempted into driving a fuller wider one from Starc and ends up edging it into the hands of Steve Smith at second slip.

Smith exclaims upon taking the catch he could not really see the ball. Worrying signs for England's batters.
