Desperate review. Even my dog saw that pitch a foot outside… and he’s asleep!

    Stevo, Cheltenham

Poor reviews from the Aussies, a sense of desperation there. Which is nice.

Crisis averted... it was pitching outside the line. Joe Root, on 73, bats on.

That's two lost reviews for Australia.

Am I happier having England scratch along at one an over (Matthew @9:20)? As long as they don't lose a wicket, then yes. It's a Test match after all, not The Hundred.

It's a tough passage here. The scoring has slowed right down, the ball is 50 overs old so it isn't doing much. It's about getting used to these conditions, it's getting quite dark out there and there's no breeze.

Is anyone actually happier watching England scratch along at one per over?

    Matthew, working from home

This feels a crucial half hour or so. If this goes pear-shaped, we're spiraling toward 2-0, another away defeat, a possible whitewash... I need another cup of tea!

Mitchell Starc is the dangerman here for England. If England can see him off here, it would make their job so much easier.

  10. Eng 203-4published at 50 overs

Ben Stokes drives into the off-side for four and that's 200 up for England. Applause from the visiting fans.

Later in the over, Mitchell Starc beats the England skipper with a bit of bounce. He has 3-41 from 14 overs.

Me and my brother reckon 325 will be decent; a Root ton, a swashbuckling 60 from Stokesy and then a 40-50 from a wagging tail would be wonderful.

Ben Stokes and Joe Root are probably the two most unbazball-y players in this England side.

Earlier today, I criticised a piece of fielding from Brendan Doggett where he carried the ball into the rope with his body.

Josh Inglis has overtaken him for fielding mare of the day... putting in a sharp diving stop in the covers to deny Joe Root a single and then sending a wild throw over wicketkeeper Alex Carey's head to undo his good work.

It's the first of two singles off the 49th over, bowled by Michael Neser.

    Anyway... the cricket.

England are 196-4, with Joe Root on 68 (129) and Ben Stokes on 14 (23).

There are mini pies being served in the press box at tea. Lovely. Clear divide between the Brits and Aussies in the way they are taken. Pretty much all of the Australians take ketchup with their pie. It's a great country, but I just can't get on board. Pies are moistened by mushy peas and/or gravy. Never ketchup. That is all.

  20. What you've missed...published at 08:58 GMT 4 December 2025

Two sessions down, one to go, England are still batting, here’s what you’ve missed.

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bat… and then his side slipped to 5-2 inside the opening 15 minutes.

Mitchell Starc (3-36) had Ben Duckett caught in the slips for 0 (1) before Ollie Pope chopped on for a duck of his own.

However, Zak Crawley and Joe Root steadied the ship, steering England through the remainder of the first session without further incident (98-2) and putting on 117 (152) for the third wicket.

Twenty minutes after the interval, Michael Neser made a breakthrough for Australia, having Crawley caught behind for 76 (93): England 122-3. And it was nearly two wickets in quick succession, Harry Brook narrowly surviving being stumped on 15 after going for a reckless ramp.

He and Root put on 54 (69) for the fourth wicket, the latter bringing up his half-century off 83 deliveries, but Starc’s return under the lights swiftly brought that partnership to an end, having Brook (31) caught in slips by Steve Smith.

Play will get back under way in a couple of minutes, with England 196-4 after 47 overs. Root has 68 (129) and Stokes has 14 (23).
