Once you're in it looks a good pitch to bat on. Joe Root looks like he has plenty of time and Harry Brook always looks like he has plenty of time so he can work it into the gaps.

Scott Boland, white zinc sun cream smeared across his nose and cheeks, is summoned by Australia captain Steve Smith.

The sun is starting to get lower at the Gabba as shadows lengthen on the outfield.

Normally, on a day-night pitch they leave eight or nine millimeters of grass, now they leave three. I'm curious to see how that's going to hold up as the Test goes on, is it just going to flatten out? Pakistan almost chased 180 here in the fourth innings, the pitch was hard, the ball moved quickly, we'll wait and see.

Hope England's stamina holds up. Not used to batting for this many overs

Michael Neser, who has the kind of haircut you would expect from someone in a modern US war film, continues.

Relatively easy going for Joe Root and Harry Brook who work a single apiece off the over.

Harry Brook has so much talent but I'm afraid he's a walking wicket. Never seen a top-class batsman with such awful shot selection with that ramp.

    Ian

I don’t know if I love this or hate this from Brook. He’s obviously decided to come out and “have it” as they say. I kind of love it, but I’m kind of watching it through my fingers.

With Harry Brook I would have gone short to him as soon as he came straight in and if that doesn't work get it back in the channel.

Looking at the field you have five on the boundary, a floating slip, a midwicket and a wide-ish cover.

It is not a Test match field for a guy who has just walked in.

  8. Eng 152-3published at 33 overs

More heart-in-mouth stuff from Harry Brook, who nonchalantly flicks Brendan Doggett over the head of the fielder in a mid-wicket catching position in the leg side.

Joe Root is not going to get a better opportunity than he has got here [to get his first Test hundred in Australia].

This pitch doesn't have any demons. It looks like he has time, and it is up to him how he plays it now.

Daring to dream just a little bit... I know, I know. Really need Joe Root to put in a big innings and get that century monkey off his back. Come on England!

Joe Root has a half-century off 83 balls, calmly steering a pull off Brendan Doggett to square leg where Marnus Labuschagne fumbles.

    Come on Joe, double up.

Zak Crawley's dismissal to Michael Neser was one of the shortest deliveries he faced from the right-arm pacer today, and the first time he'd played the pull shot against Neser in this innings.

With Alex Carey coming up to the stumps, it keeps Joe Root in the crease and Michael Neser can bowl the length that he wants.

  15. Eng 148-3published at 32 overs

Joe Root gets another one his pads, but this time he tucks in and deftly flicks it to the boundary wide of mid-on. Delicious shot.

    Root has 48.

  16. Eng 143-3published at 31.5 overs

Alex Cary is stood up to the stumps.

Joe Root steps across them and attempts to work Michael Neser off his pads.

The ball strikes him on the ankle, and Australia appeal. A brief flutter in Root's chest, perhaps, but Steve Smith and Neser realise it's going down leg.

    As you were.

I do worry that if it starts zipping under lights we could have a wobble. Hopefully we these two can keep ticking that scoreboard along until then.
