I don't buy into this rubbish that Joe Root isn't an all-time great unless he gets a ton down under. If Tiger Woods hadn't won at a particular course or Harry Kane hadn't scored a goal at a certain stadium does that make them any less great? Methinks not!

Joe Root rides the bounce and nudges a single off the second ball of Mitchell Starc's over. The Yorkshireman has 98.

Joe Root was haring down for the two. I don't like it when the batters do that!

  4. Eng 250-6published at 64 overs

Joe Root cuts to deep backward point, thinks about a single but is sent back by Will Jacks. A little chuckle between the pair.

    Root has the strike.

Steve Smith summons the ace in his pack. Enter Mitchell Starc.

Three dots to Will Jacks and then a single off Cameron Green.

    Joe Root on strike...

Another boundary will do it for Joe Root, but it will not come off the last ball of Brendan Doggett's over as he bounces him and it goes through to the gloves of Alex Carey.

Root's name is ringing round the Gabba now.

Joe Root has had so much questioning of his technique and ability by the Australia media. He has not scored a hundred in this country and now he is on 96 not out.

How's everyone's nerves for a Joe Root century? Mine are hanging by a thread!

Will Jacks looks in good touch here.

He gets a short ball from Brendan Doggett straight after drinks and coolly whips it square for four.

A few balls later and Joe Root moves into the nineties with a sliced pull which goes through fine leg for four.

Root pulls in more conventional fashion next ball through deep square.

There was a little bit of fear after those two quick England wickets fell that Joe Root might finish not out, with England all out, before reaching three figures.

He's been not out four times when England have been bowled out. In three of those innings he's made a hundred.

    26* v Australia, Brisbane (2013) (4th innings, 179 all out)

    154* v India, Nottingham (2014) (2nd innings, 496 all out)

    149* v India, The Oval (2014) (2nd innings, 486 all out)

    182* v West Indies, St. George's (2015) (2nd innings, 464 all out

    Thanks, Elizabeth.

A reminder that play can go until 11:30 GMT so England have quite a way to go before they are out of the woods here.

    Root 88 (170), Jacks 13 (22)

Joe Root plays and misses at the second ball of the 62nd over. He nervously leaves the next one before following it up with a more confident leave.

    A maiden for Cameron Green.

After drinks, Timothy Abraham will take you through the remainder of day one, with Joe Root on 88 and Will Jacks on 13.

Mitchell Starc has been whirling his arms around in the field...

Beautifully timed. Will Jacks let it come to him and clipped it through mid-wicket.

The first no ball of the day comes in the 61st over, an overstepping Brendan Doggett the guilty party. Joe Root had already run three but England will gratefully accept the extra one.

Will Jacks pierces a gap through mid-wicket to pick up his second boundary, Mitchell Starc chasing to the rope in vain.

Even if these two bat the day out, I really can’t see us getting through the new ball and Starc tomorrow. Time for a bash, then a bowl tonight.

That is what Will Jacks can bring. When he hits it, it stays hit. That will settle the nerves.

England score off every ball of Cameron Green's sixth over.

Joe Root takes three singles to move onto 85 (161). Will Jacks picks up four through mid-off and two singles of his own. He has 9 (18).

Will Jacks swings and misses at a wide delivery. He puts that shot away for the next five balls, playing out three dots, picking up two through mid-wicket, and finishing with a solid defensive stroke.

Joe Root, on 82 (158), is on strike.
