Atkinson and Carse CAN bat! Gifting their wickets away like this with Root unbeaten on a ton at the other end is utter madness!

Joe Root has a hundred in every country and that is very special. He is going to be remembered as one of the greats, without a doubt.

Barely any time to reflect on Joe Root's first Test century in Australia after two quick wickets.

    Carse c Carey b Starc 0 (Eng 264-9)

Brydon Carse the new batter for England and he has a big old swish at his first ball from Mitchell Starc.

Next ball it's a little straighter and Carse dangles his bat and edges it to Alex Carey.

A fine diving take from the Aussie wicketkeeper who took that ankle height.

Mitchell Starc is having an incredible series, but he is being gifted some of these.

You would imagined Stokes' orders are to go after it now.

    Atkinson c Carey b Starc 4 (Eng 264-8)

Gus Atkinson top edges a pull off Mitchell Starc skywards and Alex Carey and Marnus Labuschagne set off in hot pursuit of the catch.

Both men dive for it but it's Carey who gets his gloves under it.

There's a check to see if the catch is clean - and that it's not struck the spidercam wires so high did it go - but it's all good from an Australian perspective.

    Starc has five wickets.

    Root

Joe Root has done it! What a fight it has been. Largely written off by the Australian media, but it has been that kind of trip.

He has fought so hard for this. That will quieten a few critics.

Joseph Edward Root, we doff our caps to you.

Scott Boland slips on to Root's hip and he just about gets enough bat on it. The ball races away for four through fine leg.

Are the nerves getting to Joe Root here?

The England batter tentatively defends to a nip-backer from Scot Boland but Alex Carey, stood up, cannot quite get round to take it.

Not sure, in fact, if there was any bat on it.

    It is just basic bowling.

'You're going to come to me. I'm going to pop them wide of off stump and you're going to nick them.'

It is not vintage Mitchell Starc. It hasn't done anything, he has just used the angle to run it across - you can leave that all day.

Will Jacks will be kicking himself when he looks at that on the replay.

  20. wicket

    Jacks c Smith b Starc 19 (251-7)

Will Jacks has a big waft at a very very wide one from Mitchell Starc, with his bat well away from his body there, but does not connect.

He should have learned his lesson.

Next ball is a similar length from Starc, not quite as wide, and once against Jacks throws his hands at it. This time it flies off the edge of Jacks' bat and into the hands of Steve Smith in the slip cordon.

    Given away.
