Matt Prior just said on TNT Sports he "cannot get his head around it" in terms of Harry Brook attempting to ramp Michael Neser.

"I just can't get on board with it" ex-England wicketkeeper Prior says.

A single apiece for Joe Root and Brook off Brendan Doggett.

Sometimes Harry Brook looks like a genius, and sometimes he looks stupid.

He is not out, but I stand by it. There is no need for that shot! He is hitting the ball so well.

Harry Brook's foot is, indeed, behind the line.

Now then. Harry Brook attempts to ramp Michael Neser next ball with Alex Carey stood up. The Aussie wicketkeeper whips the bails off and the square-leg umpire sends it upstairs.

Brook looks to have got his foot back behind the line, though.

Harry Brook waits until the last moment then shuffles down the pitch to Michael Neser before slapping him through the covers for four.

There was some glorious stuff from Zak Crawley, as per.

Does Zak Crawley not like being in the 70s, or does he just struggle to get back into rhythm after lunch and is always on about 70 if he survived that long?

    Daniel Taylor, Guildford

I genuinely rate Crawley, I think he’s a great cricketer. It really frustrates me how he never pushes on and tons up when in the 70s and 80s. It happens all too often.

Zak Crawley has problem in the 70s... The stressful 70s.

It is the 15th time he has reached 70 in Test cricket and he has now been out nine times in the 70s.

That was his fourth score of 76.

I respect it from Harry Brook. He has given all three stumps, but with the length of the ball he is not going to be bowled.

  10. Eng 133-3published at 29 overs

Harry Brook picks up the first boundary of his innings by neatly clipping Brendan Doggett off his legs for four through mid-wicket.

That was in the air for a little while but Brook timed it nicely.

I was just about to say England could do with something more calm from Brook than we saw in Perth, then the Yorkshire man backs away to leg and waspishly cuts Doggett for four.

Australia are resorting to the short ball theory because they know England will fall for it, hook, line, and sinker.

Alex Carey has got to take credit for this - he has been up to the stumps and back. Zak Crawley is looking to pull the ball into the leg side and because Carey is stood back he has taken a simple catch. Zak Crawley and Joe Root have weathered the storm really well, but Crawley will be fuming with that dismissal.

Zak Crawley looked comfortable and Michael Neser looked relatively unthreatening.

Just the cocktail for a Crawley dimissal.

The England opener with a lapse in concentration as he attempt to play a pull shot from the off side into the leg and gets a smidgen of bat on it.

Alex Carey gobbles up the catch with delight.

  16. What's happened so far...published at 06:58 GMT 4 December 2025

Just getting up with a 7am alarm? Here’s what you’ve missed so far…

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bat – a decision which did not look good when England slipped to 5-2 inside the opening 15 minutes.

Mitchell Starc had Ben Duckett caught in the slips for 0 (1) in the opening over and he was followed back to the pavilion nine balls later by Ollie Pope, who chopped on for a duck of his own.

However, Zak Crawley and Joe Root steadied the ship, the former leading the way with a 68-ball half-century as England reached 98-2 at the end of the first session. Crawley was 61 (80) and Root unbeaten on 32 (60).

England's third-wicket pair have continued relatively calmly after the break, bringing up their century partnership off 135 deliveries in the first over of the session.

Crawley, who's timed a few lovely boundaries, has 76 off 88 balls. Root has 41 off 70, although he has just gloved the ball mere centimetres wide of wicketkeeper Alex Carey's outstretched hand.

It does give me a little bit of fear this short ball tactic to Joe Root into the leg side.

I think he is going to take it on. I know he can hit it hard into the ground, but they have lingering fielders.

It makes you go, 'No, no, leave it!'

  18. Eng 121-2published at 27 overs

Brenadan Doggett persists with the short stuff.

Joe Root plays a flamboyant hook to his fourth delivery and gets a top edge down the leg side which brings him four.

A diving Alex Carey was a couple of feet away from that one.
