    Root drags England fight into final day against NZ

    New Zealand resumed on 252-3 and added another 110 to their lead before their final wicket fell shortly after lunch.

    Henry Nicholls top-scored with 121 (171), there were half-centuries from Rachin Ravindra (76) and Daryl Mitchell (68), and Nathan Smith made a handy 38 at number eight.

    Set a world record chase of 463 to win, England were quickly reduced to 40-3 before Joe Root and Harry Brook combined for a 97-run fourth-wicket stand, Root celebrating his 14,000th Test run in the process.

    However, Brook (58) and James Rew departed before the end of day four, with England trailing by 281 runs with five wickets in hand.

    Root is unbeaten on 75 (137), Jordan Cox is yet to get off the mark.
