New Zealand tested James Rew a little bit, that's why they brought Will O'Rourke on. Rew was looking to hit that for six.

  3. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 55.5 overs

    Rew c Mitchell b O'Rourke 24 (Eng 217-6)

Short from Will O'Rourke and James Rew decides to take on the bumper.

He ends up gloving a hook shot - pulling a hand off of the bat - behind and Daryl Mitchell scuttles back from second slip to gobble up the catch.

With a couple of overs left that wasn't really the way for Rew to play.

  4. Eng 216-5published at 55 overs

James Rew content to see off another maiden from Nathan Smith. The shutters have come down at The Oval as we edge towards the close of play.

New Zealand's attack have been very consistent in their threat today.

All four of the seamers have brought about a false shot with more than 20% of the deliveries bowled.

  6. Eng 216-5published at 54 overs

Jordan Cox sees off the remainder of Will O'Rourke's over.

James Rew got away with one there.

You'd hope to catch those really.

  8. dropped catch

Rew dropped on 23published at 53.2 overs

Very nearly commentator's curse, Tuffers. Wind it in.

James Rew pulls Will O'Rourke behind square and Rachin Ravindra ghoulishly appears out of the shadows of the stands.

It's gone high off a Rew top edge but Ravindra spills it tumbling forward.

O'Rourke puts his hands on his heads.

I've been impressed with James Rew. Unfazed and a good technique. Looks like someone with a bit of time. He looks like someone who can play.

  10. Eng 214-5published at 53 overs

Plenty of encouragement for Nathan Smith from his New Zealand team-mates as James Rew solidly blocks out a maiden.

The Black Caps will keen to winkle out a couple of more wickets before stumps.

PitchViz is suggesting this is still a very good surface for batting. The average rating for Day 2 (4.6) has been almost identical to Day 1 (5.0)

    Thanks, Mike.

Nathan Smith begins a new over.

James Rew and Jordan Cox have 30 minutes or so to keep their wickets in tact.

  13. Eng 214-5published at 52 overs

Close, close. Will O'Rourke almost draws an edge from Jordan Cox, throwing his hands at a wide-ish delivery.

A single brings James Rew on strike and the younger debutant pulls hard through square for four.

Right, here's Timothy Abraham to take you through to the close.

  14. Eng 208-5published at 51 overs

Jordan Cox takes two off Nathan Smith, sending the ball out into the covers.

Half of The Oval is bathed in early-evening sunshine, with the rest now cast in shadow.

After yesterday's sub-par over-rate and the rain delay earlier, we'll be playing until 7pm tonight.

It's becoming increasingly clear that without Stokes, this is a very mediocre England side.

    Luke, Athens

  16. Eng 205-5published at 50 overs

New Zealand do the double-change for the second time in this session, with Will O'Rourke back for Kyle Jamieson.

His first ball is sharp and short and Jordan Cox has to weave out of its way.

Cox knocks the next ball into the covers for a single, the only run in the over.

    Daniel Norcross

It's been a very difficult Test match for keepers. The ball seems to be moving a lot after it leaves the batter, they're having to dive in both directions.

  18. Eng 204-5published at 49 overs

Nathan Smith back into the attack, replacing Matt Henry.

The seamer conceded just four runs off his previous four overs, but concedes the same number of runs off his first ball.

It's a second four for Jordan Cox, striking through point on the back foot to bring up England's 200.
