Former England batter on Test Match Special

Fantastic bowling from Rachin Ravindra, he took the pace off it and held his nerve. He may have given New Zealand a glimmer of hope. That may be too generous.

  2. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 11.4 overs

    Brevis c Mitchell b Ravindra 21 (SA 131-3)

That's the end of Dewald Brevis.

The South Africa batter dances down the track and goes for another big one, but skies it instead.

Daryl Mitchell, having already pulled off a stunner on the field, is underneath it and it's a safe pair of hands from the New Zealand man again.

  3. 6 runs

    SA 131-2published at 11.3 overs

    45 needed off 51 balls

Rachin Ravindra is into the attack and South Africa find their first boundary in four overs.

It's a six off the bat of Dewald Brevis.

  4. SA 123-2published at 11 overs

    53 needed off 54 balls

After conceding 24 in his first two overs, Matt Henry returns for New Zealand.

And it’s much, much better for the seamer as he gives away just four - but South Africa still need fewer runs than they have balls left.

We've had a good couple of overs for New Zealand but South Africa are well and truly in the driving seat.

  6. SA 119-2published at 10 overs

    57 needed off 60 balls

We’re halfway through the innings now and it's another over without a boundary.

Things have finally settled down a little after that early battering and New Zealand seem to have a bit more grip on things.

But surely, it feels too little, too late?

  7. SA 114-2published at 9 overs

    62 needed off 66 balls

No boundary from Mitch Santner's second over but it's good running between the wickets from South Africa as they still get eight out of it.

New Zealand will be worried Aiden Markram is still at the crease and looking all fired up.

  8. SA 106-2published at 8 overs

    70 needed off 72 balls

There is no let-up for New Zealand though as new batter Dewald Brevis announces himself with a four off the first ball he faces.

The required rate has already dipped below six, and South Africa continue to cruise despite losing the couple of wickets.

Daryl Mitchell's so close to the boundary sponge as he takes the catch, parries it back in and then takes the catch again.

We're so used to seeing those catches now but it's great awareness of where you are as a fielder and where the boundary sponge is. He does well to not lose his balance.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 7.4 overs

    Rickelton c Mitchell b Neesham 21 (SA 102-2)

    Brilliant fielding from Daryl Mitchell!

Ryan Rickelton goes for a big one but doesn't get enough distance and Mitchell grabs it first time on the boundary before his momentum carries him over the rope.

The New Zealand fielder has the presence of mind to throw the ball back up in the air before recovering to complete a superb catch.

  11. 50 runs

50 for Markrampublished at 7 overs

    SA 96-1 | 80 needed off 78 balls

That is Aiden Markram's half-century in just 19 balls!

And the Proteas captain brings it up in style by launching Mitch Santner for six over long-on.

It's the joint fastest 50 at this T20 World Cup, alongside Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka against Oman.

  12. SA 85-1published at 6.1 overs

    91 needed off 83 balls

Mitch Santner's left-arm spin comes into play after the teams took a short break for drinks.

New Zealand probably needed that breather more than anyone to regroup after that onslaught.

  14. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 6 overs

    SA 83-1

We’ve only just come to end of the powerplay, but South Africa are cruising.

They pretty much just need to finish the job now. What a start this has been!

That is humongous, 103 metres. What a shot from Ryan Rickelton because that's not a bad ball from Jacob Duffy.

I almost feel a bit here for the bowlers, they're not sure where they can bowl to these South Africa batters.

  16. 6 runs

    SA 81-1published at 5.3 overs

    Target 176

No question marks over this one though!

Ryan Rickelton has walloped this into the stands - a massive 103‑metre blow over mid‑wicket.

  17. SA 75-1published at 5.2 overs

    Target 176

Ryan Rickelton has come in at number three for South Africa.

And the left-hander has joined the party with a four over the mid-off before going almost all the way in the following delivery.

That looked like it had just about cleared the rope but the umpire signals a four.

    Dawid Malan

That's ruined a really good over for New Zealand. What a start to South Africa's chase, you couldn't have asked for more of a dream start.

If they can keep this momentum going you feel New Zealand are out of the game.

  19. SA 67-1published at 5 overs

    Target 176

But there is no stopping Aiden Markram.

He's been kept out of action for a while but pulls off another crisp drive to move to 45 from 15 balls!

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 4.4 overs

    De Kock b Ferguson 20 (SA 62-1)

New Zealand finally get a respite!

They needed that one as Lockie Ferguson balls three dots in a row and then undoes Quinton de Kock with a slower ball.

He pumps the air - more out of relief than anything.
