Binnian Tunnel - the Reunion Down Under - page 3

Back to the Rockface - 50 years later

Every man there was presented with a Plaque by the Chief Executive of the NI Water service, Mr Robert Martin. The plaques, which were set in Mourne Granite bore the inscription; "Binnian Tunnel - 50th Anniversary 1952-2002 - Men Against Mountain". (see bottom of this page) Here above from left to right we see the presentation to Tom Newell, William Hanna and William Doran.

The Davey Brothers, Bobby & Willie, Sandy Heaney and Thomas Newell stand above the entrance of Dunnywater.

Happy with the days events, the men proudly show their plaques to the news cameras.

Thomas Rooney (foreground) and Willie McStea sign a copy of the famous "breakthrough" photograph which was sent to their old friend Robert Stevenson in Melbourne, Australia.

A new exhibit commemorating the tunnel was presented to the Silent Valley Visitors Centre by the BBC "your place and mine" team.

The display gets a close scrutiny by the most qualified of all critics. I hope we passed!

Special thanks...
The success of the the tunnellers' visit to their workplace of 50 years ago was due very much to the help of the Northern Ireland Water Service. Particular thanks must go to Technical Director Harry Thompson and Director (East) Trevor Haslett. Also to CEO Robert Martin who readily agreed to support the BBC team's plans. The Water Service set operational plans in motion to redirect water away from the tunnel so that it would be dry on 28th August.
Thank You!
