The Binnian Tunnel - Archive Photos

Photographs from the Tunnel of 50 years ago

(1) This is the locomotive that the Daveys mentioned. It was primarily used to pull skips of broken granite out of the tunnel and to bring in supplies and equipment. The earlier diesel locos were replaced by battery powered ones inside the tunnel and the diesels were then used outside only. The man looking at the camera is believed to be Willie McStay.

(2) An "Emco" shovel. This was used in the mucking out process and lifted the spoil into skips which would be taken out of the tunnel by a locomotive. The operator in this picture is unknown. Can you name him?

(3) Three workers standing at the tunnel face. Your emails have named them as Arthur McCartan, Jimmy Wallace & Jimmy McComb.

(4) This would have been the last glimpse of daylight for workers as they headed underground at the start of a twelve hour shift.

(5) This is how the Silent Valley heading looked during works which would later become the tunnel exit into the reservoir.

(6) A stoneworker using plugs and feathers to break granite for the entrance works at the Annalong Valley end. Who is he? Do you know?

(7) The interior of the site office at the Annalong Valley where Dr Colebrook drew up the plans and oversaw the ongoing work.

(8) Tunnel workers emptying the full skips onto the tip. This photo shows the undersides of the skips when swivelled.
All of the historic photographs on these pages have been kindly provided by Mr Norman Ervine.
