Dina Asher-Smith has secured her spot in the record books on the penultimate day of the European Athletics Championships.

She won gold alongside Amy Hunt, Success Eduan and Imani-Lara Lansiquot in the women's 4x100m relay.

It meams Asher-Smith achieved her seventh gold at the championships - 10 years after capturing her first and takes her medal total to seven golds, two silvers and a bronze.

This makes her the joint-most successful athlete in European Athletic Championships history.

Her teammate Amy Hunt is also on the brink of making history. Keep reading to find out how.

Great Britain's success in the women's relay means Amy Hunt has won her third medal of the competition and is on the cusp of a potential historic quadruple.

She hyped up her fellow athletes after the race. She told BBC Sport:

"I am stood next to the real life GOAT [greatest of all time]. She [Asher-Smith] is the most decorated European athlete in history.

"I am stood next to some amazing women. This girl [Eduan] is a midwife, she brings babies into the world. This girl [Lansiquot] wrote a play. We're all amazing.

"That was stunning to come together. I had the time of my life."

If she secures the top spot again in the mixed 4x100m relay on Sunday night, she'll become the first athlete to win four gold medals at a single edition of the European Championships in its 92-year history.

It was also gold for the GB men's 4x100m relay.

The team (Jeremiah Azu, Louie Hinchliffe and Zharnel Hughes) were ahead for most of the final before 100m gold medallist Romell Glave brought the gold home in a time of 38.45 seconds.

It was Zharnel Hughes' fifth European gold, taking him level with the likes of Matthew Hudson-Smith, Mo Farah and Roger Black as the most successful British man at the championships.

The two relay golds have taken Britain's medal tally to 12, including 6 golds.

Ireland's Kate O'Connor also got the top spot with gold in the heptathlon.

With just the 800m race to go, O'Connor was 51-points ahead of Emma Oosterwegel of the Netherlands in second.

It meant that as long as she finished the race within 3 seconds of Oosterwegel, she would cinch the gold medal - and that she did.

After the race she said: "I was so nervous before that run, but when I hear cheers like that for me [from the Irish support] going around those two laps, there was no way I was going to let that gold medal slip through my fingers.

"I did want to win the race, but with 50 metres to go I knew I had enough in me to stay within the three seconds and I just wanted to leave here injury-free and with a gold medal around my neck."
