  1. Some quick Matt maths: Jamie has covered 85.9 miles so farpublished at 16:14 GMT 19 March 2025

    Matt Edmondson
    Radio 1 presenter

Jamie's pace has been pretty amazing so far but he definitely has slowed down today. He's done nearly a marathon already today, 25.5 miles so far. I was doing the maths earlier on this and in the last few days he's run 85.9 miles, which is just blowing my mind.

He has just had the toughest day I think probably of his entire life, it has been brutal for him and it has been genuinely painful to watch, to be around, to not know how to help in any way. It's been really... gruelling doesn't cover it.

I'm pleased to say that the last time that I saw him, with the help of one of his lifelong friends Ollie Proudlock, he just had a tiny glimmer of energy back in his body and his eyes. I think that, well I know he's going to do it today and it'll mean the world to him that his mate showed up and gave him a cuddle at that time.

  2. Vick & Jerry are live from Loughborough, awaiting Jamie's arrivalpublished at 16:07 GMT 19 March 2025

I've literally never been so invested in something going on on the radio, I've cried every day listening. Jamie's such an inspiration, it's hard to believe what a person can go through. Go on Jamie, you're smashing it!

I've had a really hard week and struggling to keep going as I've been grieving a loss. Whilst he's going through a very difficult and different challenge. I'm no runner but the motivation and love surrounding him is reminding me about the joy each day can bring.

Matt: "We've been looking for these little boosts right, and I think having your bestie turn up and have a little cry, have a little cuddle, and say that they're proud of you - that is just priceless. I feel blessed to be here watching this, it's beautiful."

Jamie: "He just means so much to me, and to have people when you're struggling and you don't know if you can go any further, and you're just holding it all in. Those are the moments you want. Wow, that's big... I think I can do the rest of it. Let's go."

Not before a little physio Jamie, let's not forget about those aching muscles!

  5. Jamie shares just how much it means to see his best mate Proudlockpublished at 15:12 GMT 19 March 2025

    Jamie Laing
    Radio 1's Ultra Marathon Man

There's a few very rare people in my life that I will phone up and I can talk to and I know that they will only listen, and they will try and get me through it. It doesn't matter if it's good or bad or anything - Ollie is one of those guys.

He's been there through everything. I lived with him for many years, he's been through it all and he's always there. It doesn't matter if I'm in my best time or worst time, he always picks up the phone and he'll always be positive.

  6. A very proud Proudlock surprises Jamiepublished at 15:01 GMT 19 March 2025

If you thought it was an emotional morning... this afternoon has us welling up even more. Proudlock, one of Jamie's best friends of over 15 years, surprised Jamie as he reached his latest pit stop.

In Matt's words "Jamie's absolutely gone, he's full of tears, full of emotion. It's a really beautiful thing to watch and I think testament to the power of friendship really."

It was a beautiful thing to hear on-air, let's hope it's given Jamie the boost he needed. Here's some of the reaction:

Jamie: "That means the world to me dude, are you kidding me! He's got a sore hip aswell!"

Proudlock: "I wish I could be running right now, but I'm here. I'm going to be hobbling with you, I'm going to be shouting out of this van. You've got this. I'm so proud of you mate. It's a rare sight to see you cry. You've got me, I mean I cry a lot - seeing that video earlier of you two when you started welling up, I was crying on the train up here and I said to myself 'do you know what let's get the tears out now', I'll be fine when I see him. Ah mate, I know how much this means dude."

  7. Proudlock joins Jamie for this next leg of his journey!published at 14:45 GMT 19 March 2025

If there's anyone who could motivate Jamie to dig deep during this epic challenge then it might just be Jamie's long-time friend and Made In Chelsea co-star Oliver Proudlock.

  8. Matt the hype man explains why he's determined to get Jamie over that finish linepublished at 14:30 GMT 19 March 2025

"He just scooped me up and he cradled me in the way that I needed."

    Matt Edmondson
    Radio 1 presenter

Whilst showing some love to his regular co-host and best mate Mollie King, who completed an epic cyling challenge for Comic Relief last year, Matt Edmondson explained why he's committed to getting Jamie through this ultra marathon challenge.

"The human body is really not meant to do what he's doing, particularly if you've not trained for this your whole life. It's really hard to see him in the physical pain but the harder thing is seeing him in the mental anguish, because he's in a low place, a very low place.

I feel like I owe it to him to get him through that. I obviously have got Mollie King, my bestie in the whole wide world. She and I use each other all the time to be each other's emotional support. When she went on maternity leave the first time round, Jamie came in and he covered, and it was at a point where I was at the absolute lowest, mental health wise, I've ever been.

I was having a terrible, terrible time - which you wouldn't have heard on-air because that was the only time that I was sort of vaguely feeling OK - and Jamie, who I knew a little bit but not alot, came into that show and he just scooped me up and he cradled me in the way that I needed. Actually, in Mol's absence, the thing that I feared missing the most was that emotional support, and Jamie stepped in and was there for me in a way that I can't really begin to articulate. His kindness at the time, his support, was incredible. And part of that was him opening up about his mental health struggles and his anxiety.

He got me through a really, really challenging time and we became as tight as it's possible for two people to become. He is one of my absolute favourite human beings, he also happens to make me laugh almost more than anyone else I've ever met. So I feel like, I've gotta get him through this. I've got to."

  12. Two words to sum up Jamie today - tired and brokenpublished at 13:35 GMT 19 March 2025

    Sam & Danni
    Radio 1 presenters

Sam and Danni are live on Radio 1 now, bringing us updates from Jamie as he continues his Ultra Marathon Man challenge. Stay tuned on BBC Sounds to hear how he's getting on as he's officially over halfway through.

Sam: Today, Jamie's ultra marathon has taken him 30 miles to Leicester from Loughbourgh. Two words to sum it up I think are tired and broken, that's the vibe I'm getting from Jamie this lunchtime.

Danni: On Monday I think Jamie started off so positive, he wasn't sure if he could do it and he has reached the midway point today which is amazing but you can definitely hear that he's struggling. It's getting really hard.

Sam: This is an unimaginably sizeable task.

Danni: It's hard to listen to actually, you can hear it, he's having a really hard time out there - but you are keeping him going, that's what's going to get him through this is the amazing support from the Radio 1 listeners.

This is a person who is completely spent of absolutely everything. To see you fall to the ground there is hard. This is not a soft surface, and you've just hit the ground on your knees, head in your hands. That picture says more than we ever could I think. But you're going to do it, and we believe in you.

Matt has a quick chat with Jamie as he passes the halfway mark of his challenge

    Jamie Laing
    Radio 1's Ultra Marathon Man

I just didn't think it could get any worse, it is really tough out there. It's really tough out there.

That's brutal. Beyond brutal. I've never had it where every part of my body is wanting to give up.

There are so many hills, up and down. Uphill's hard and then downhill's hard because you're banging your knees as you go down. Your knees are sore and your ankles are sore and your body is sore.

I mean it's just brutal on the body.

    Matt Edmondson
    Radio 1 presenter

I’ve teared up a lot today at the different stories from people who’ve spoken about the ways Comic Relief has been able to change their lives. For him, the motivator is he’s got to do this to help other people. Every part of him says, ‘Quit’. And he won’t do that.

Jamie was beyond despondent this morning, so much so his on-the-road pal Matt Edmondson thought he might not be able to start Day 3 of the challenge.

"I don’t think I’ve seen him quite that bad before. He was unable to speak. He’s desperately scared of failure; scared of people thinking he’s in some way weak. I keep saying to him - if you need to cry, then cry."

He'd already done the hard work by saying yes to doing this challenge - but he has since found some incredible inner strength to power through the first half of the day.
