Jamie has been sharing how much the people cheering him on have kept him going on the first day of his challenge. Keep it up ❤️

It's a real mixture of emotions doing something like this because you get to some points where you really don't think you can do it and you really can't do it... But also, the best moments are running in just now, with the crowd here, people have turned up to come say hi. I've been running down the roads, people have been honking their horns and just saying that they've donated and that is incredible, and people have been saying so many amazing things, and that for me has just been incredible.

  4. Running for Mylespublished at 17:20 GMT 17 March 2025

Jamie has had Stargazing by Myles Smith on repeat during his ultra marathon challenge, so who better to surprise him on-air after running for miles than actual Myles Smith?

He had some supportive words for Jamie, to give him even more of a boost during his challenge.

Myles Smith called into Radio 1 earlier to congratulate Jamie on his challenge so far

Myles Smith: "Dude I'm so so proud, it's incredible what you're doing. It's insane, honestly i've been online since this morning following it and you've already done way more miles than I could ever do in my life and it's incredible."

Perhaps the most excited we've seen Jamie yet, he's hoping a song inspired by him might be on the cards...

Jamie Laing: "Your song is honestly playing in my headphones as I'm running down, it is the greatest. I have been your biggest supporter from the start. You're the greatest and you're going to go on to do so many amazing things and having your support is just incredible. If you can now write a song about me, running, that would really be the icing on the cake..."

Could it be on the cards? We think so from Myles' reply...

Myles Smith: "Let's do it man, let's do it absolutely. Like I said at the Brits, I'm always going to be with you wherever you are and here I am in your ears, on your phone, on your run. You're going to do it, you're going to smash it. Mate don't worry about tomorrow, get through these last few miles, kick your feet up and have a nice tea."

  5. Motivational messages from Vick's mumpublished at 17:08 GMT 17 March 2025

Cheering Jamie on is a family affair, with Vick Hope's mum Ady sending in a message of support. A touched Jamie said she is "one of the greatest women in the world, she's magical."

    Quote Message

Hi Jamie, it's Ady here, your adopted mother. Listen I'm just ringing to let you know that I'll be with you all the way. I think that what you're doing is absolutely amazing, you are amazing, you've got it in you, just keep going, when the legs are tired I'll be behind you egging you on and I'm sending you lots and lots and lots of bright blessings. Go Jamie, go.

It is mentally exhausting, physically exhausting. I've now got these little things on my toes to stop them getting blisters. My toe's got a black mark on it now. It's wild. It's the wild west out there!

  7. Matt's beaming with pride after Jamie nearly reaches the finish line for Day 1published at 16:36 GMT 17 March 2025

    Matt Edmondson
    Radio 1 presenter

You said something that's really stuck with me which was - we were talking about the fact that this is really emotional right? And Jamie said 'I've felt like I was going to cry a few times today' and I was like 'do it, you've got to let it out right, it's going to come at some point this week, it might be today, it might be tomorrow, it's going to come you've just got to run with it.'

And I said 'are you much of a crier, do you cry much?' and he said 'not really, not really, the only thing that ever makes me cry is when people tell me that they're proud of me' and that almost broke my heart.

There's so much to be proud of Jamie for, regardless of what he's doing. As a person, as a friend, as a creative mind. All the various things you've done in your life, and despite that you're still putting your body and your mind through hell now for the next five days. So I'm telling you now, we're all very proud of you. So you can take that and carry it with you.

  8. Ultra Marathon Man Jamie has impressed his trainers with his speedpublished at 16:26 GMT 17 March 2025

Although Jamie has surprised his trainers with his pace today, he's made no secret of how much he's struggled to keep going. Luckily, Matt Edmondson has been there throughout to banish any negative self-talk.

Vick Hope: "Jamie, one thing I did overhead one of your trainers saying is that you're faster than anyone expected you to be. Are you aware of how well you're doing?"

Jamie Laing: "I sound very upbeat now because I'm with you guys, but there was a period from about the 30-40km mark where I was really not having a good time. I came into a pit stop and Matt was there, who's right here. And I honestly wanted to take Matt to one side and say 'I don't think I can do this'. And Matt just looked at me and said 'I can see negativity is coming to your brain so lets just get that away.' So I was like alright let's get rid of that."

    Jamie Laing
    Radio 1's Ultra Marathon Man

He's pretty tired and had very few words, uncharacteristically for him. We'll let him catch his breath before hearing from him properly soon.

    Quote Message

I'm exhausted, I'm so tired. It's so far. It's really far, it's a long way. We're not in London anymore. We're in Harpenden.

  11. Hello from Harpenden!published at 15:38 GMT 17 March 2025

Vick Hope and Jeremiah Asiamah (aka Vick & Jerry) are broadcasting live from Harpenden awaiting the arrival of Ultra Marathon Man Jamie Laing.

They've heard he's around 4 miles away and are hoping he will make it to today's finish line soon, toenail intact of course.

  12. A toenail locket, the perfect gift for any occasion...published at 15:32 GMT 17 March 2025

    Jamie Laing
    Radio 1's Ultra Marathon Man

Jamie and Matt checked in with Sam & Danni earlier, and it's getting tough out there on the road... particularly for Jamie's feet.

    Quote Message

I want to stay upbeat... yeah it's tough, I'm sore, I'm tired, my legs are tired, everything's tired but I'm still in good spirits, that's the most important thing. I've got blisters all up both feet, and a toenail which looks like it's going to need to get removed - but the good thing is that when it does come off I'm going to turn it into a locket for you, Matt.

  15. Nick the physio is working his magical hands on Jamiepublished at 14:57 GMT 17 March 2025

No you can't remove your achilles Jamie

During the pitstop, Jamie was able to get some much needed attention from the magical hands of Physio Nick. Matt also noticed Jamie was slightly wobbly on his feet so wanted to know where Jamie was feeling any pain.

Jamie Laing: "My achilles are hurting, and I said [to Nick] 'can you just remove them?', and he said 'no you can't remove your achilles but I have a little button that I can press within your calf muscle'. And when he pressed that honestly it was like I was electrocuted. He's got magical hands and he's a magical person!"

  16. Jamie Laing is getting closer to tears during a whirlwind Day 1published at 14:40 GMT 17 March 2025

    Jamie Laing
    Radio 1's Ultra Marathon Man

At his third pitstop of the day, Sam & Danni check in with our Ultra Marathon Man and his roadside cheerleader Matt Edmondson for an update on how he's feeling. Safe to say, emotions are already running high.

Jamie Laing: "I have huge respect for anyone who has ever done an ultra marathon, anyone who has ever done a marathon, I will respect you for the rest of your life. This is a whirlwind of emotions. At one point I thought I was going to cry.

"I'm in real real pain. We were running down to this stop and someone came past in a car and blew me a kiss and it nearly sent me over the edge."

  17. An update from the road from Matt Edmondsonpublished at 14:10 GMT 17 March 2025

"He looks a little bit broken"

    Matt Edmondson
    Radio 1 presenter

Matt Edmondson is currently in dual carriageway territory somewhere between London and today's final destination Harpenden. He has eyes on Jamie Laing and caught up with Sam & Danni to give an update on his current mood and mindset.

Matt Edmondson: "Jamie is just a lone figure on the horizon running along. It's a grey day out and I think he started the morning really jubilantly and in a great mood, but at lunch time - I don't know if it was a mistake - but he took the decision to join me and sit on a sofa for like five minutes.

"I think it lulled his body into a false sense of security like 'oh ok we can rest now this ordeal is over'. And then as he started this next part of his run, the second half of today's ultra marathon... he doesn't look great if i'm being totally honest."

    Quote Message

He looks a little bit broken - I'm scared to use the word broken because we're still on day one and we're not even at marathon one being done yet, let alone ultra marathon.

  18. Will the real Jamie Laing please stand up?published at 13:49 GMT 17 March 2025

It's giving Boris Johnson from behind...

In case you missed it earlier, Sam & Danni surprised Jamie in Hyde Park with a sea of Jamie Laing impersonators.

They've still got the wigs in the studio and discussed who else they might be confused for.

Danni Diston: "From behind it was giving Boris Johnson but from the front it was Jamie Laing, it really was."

Sam MacGregor: "See also charity shop Sue, and a bit Sabrina Carpenter I think."

  19. 5 hours of running for Jamiepublished at 13:36 GMT 17 March 2025

Day 1 of Jamie Laing's Ultra Marathon challenge is well underway now, and Jamie has been on the road for about 5 hours now. He set off from London at 8.30am this morning, and he's running towards Harpenden where he'll be finishing for the day.

Sam and Danni are live on Radio 1 now, and they'll be bringing us updates on how Jamie is getting on. They joined Jamie at the starting line earlier today, donning peroxide blonde wigs amongst a sea of Laing lookalikes to give Jamie a boost. But the question we all want to know - are they still wearing their wigs?
