  1. In amongst the scooter drama, we haven't actually heard from Jamie in a whilepublished at 10:07 GMT 18 March 2025

But we're expecting to get word from him in just over five minutes. Listen live at the top of this page or via BBC Sounds.

We hope his left bum cheek is feeling better than first thing this morning...

  2. Live from the scooter crushpublished at 09:56 GMT 18 March 2025

Now it's over to Darren at the industrial unit to crush Matt's scooter.

His 'roller' took a couple of minutes to actually get started, which was quite the anticlimax.

"It's performance anxiety, isn't it. It happens to the best of us," said Matt Edmondson.

But eventually, the roller did its thing, wheels popped off, and Matt's ideal mode of transport was reduced to crushed metal.

Greg James decided to play 'Goodbye, My Lover' by James Blunt to mark the occasion.

  4. Have Greg James' listeners raised enough money to crush Matt Edmondson's scooter?published at 09:35 GMT 18 March 2025

The aim was to boost donations from £22k to £75k, the incentive being that Matt's scooter would be crushed in an industrial estate.

Matt himself even got on board, donating his own cash and knowing it could spell farewell to his beloved mode of transport.

Never underestimate the power of Radio 1 listeners.

We're about to find out just how much we've raised.

  5. A bit of perspective from Matt Edmondsonpublished at 09:26 GMT 18 March 2025

And a reminder of why we're supporting Jamie Laing's challenge

"Put yourself in his sweaty, well-trodden shoes. Imagine the thing that caused you so much physical pain and took you the longest amount of time. Imagine waking up the next morning and having to do it again. It's important now that we support him at this stage."

  6. Since Greg James announced the scooter forfeit, listeners have raised over £30,000published at 09:20 GMT 18 March 2025

    That's incredible.

But if we can't raise over £75,000 by the end of Greg's show, Matt Edmondson's scooter - "one of the loves of my life" - will remain standing.

Matt's so invested in raising donations for Jamie Laing's challenge that he's even going to donate some money himself.

"They say if you love something, let it go..."

I think for £75,000, I would actually like the scooter to get crushed. I think I've come to terms with it. If we can raise that money, wow...

  12. It's Greg vs. Matt in a bid to raise more money for Comic Reliefpublished at 08:33 GMT 18 March 2025

And Matt Edmondson's scooter could be toast

"We’ve announced a total of £22,559, but I would like to get those donations up a little bit," says Greg. And he has a cunning plan.

Matt Edmondson has been on the road with Jamie - in a car, we should add, he hasn't run ten metres. But this morning he's been sent elsewhere, to a mysterious industrial location.

He's joined by a man named Nick, a heavy piece of machinery called a vibrating roller, and his beloved scooter - the same one Matt rides to work every day.

Greg has set his listeners a challenge. "I believe in the listeners so much that I think we can get to £75,000 this morning, and we can crush your scooter. Is that a deal, Matt?"

A reluctant Matt replies. "Can I have one more ride on it before we say goodbye? But yes, if you get to 75, you can crush my scooter."

Click the player at the top of this page to find out if we can get the amount required to bid Matt's scooter farewell.

Greg that is savage. Terrible friend, will donate.

  14. Greg has a surprise to put a spring in Jamie's steppublished at 08:16 GMT 18 March 2025

    And it concerns Matt Edmondson

Greg was about to reveal Jamie's first Comic Relief donations total, but he says he's holding it back because he wants to give our Ultra Marathon Man a special treat this morning.

"The reason I’m delaying it is because I’ve got a plan to properly make you laugh today. I promise it’ll be worth it. But I’m scheming against Matt Edmondson. I have intervened."

Checking Matt isn't listening to Greg on air, he adds: "He thinks he’s going to one place, but I’m sending him to a different one without him realising. And a thing will be happening just after 8am today. If this comes off, honestly, it will be the end of a five year journey.”

The people honking their horns and running beside me, the donations from amazing people…

  16. "It's 100% harder than I thought it was going to be"published at 07:59 GMT 18 March 2025

We've had our first word from Jamie Laing, who's up on his feet (thankfully) and ready to go for Day 2. But he's feeling the strain.

"The body will be aching, but how’s your brain?" asks Greg James.

Jamie: "Brain is a little bit tired, because I was having very weird sleep last night. Which is apparently normal, but I wasn’t warned about it."

He says he was "waking up on the hour every hour and having weird hallucinations and everything. Yesterday I had a lovely message from the singer Myles Smith, but I hallucinated that I had to get up and run with Myles Smith to his concert. I was so convinced I was almost getting out of bed. It was very bizarre."

Was there a moment yesterday when he felt he wasn't going to complete his first ultra marathon? "There was one point from about 30-40km when I realised how hard it was going to be. 100% harder than I thought. Something is wrong with my bum and it just won’t go away. Something going on with my left cheek…"

  18. Welcome to Day 2 of Jamie Laing's Ultra Marathon Manpublished at 07:40 GMT 18 March 2025

You had to feel for Jamie Laing yesterday afternoon when, having completed his first ultra marathon, was reminded of the fact he needed to run another four this week.

That's right: Five ultra marathons in five days. A colossal 150 miles in total, 30 per day. All to raise money for Comic Relief.

Aside from a sore bum, we barely heard a complaint from Jamie yesterday. We suspect today might be a different story.

We are, however, expecting to find out how much money he's raised so far.

He continues his journey at approx 8am GMT this morning, where Greg James promises to have a surprise in store for our Ultra Marathon Man. Listen live on Sounds or via the top of this page.

  19. Day 1 over and out - 4 more to go...published at 18:02 GMT 17 March 2025

What a day it's been for Radio 1's Ultra Marathon Man, Jamie Laing. His challenge for Comic Relief is well and truly underway, and he's made it through the first day - running 30 miles from London to Harpenden.

A lot has happened, let's have a look at the best bits from Day 1...

Jamie set off for his mammoth challenge this morning at 8.30am, joined at the starting line by his wife Sophie Habboo to cheer him on.

    Quote Message

He's been silent for the last three days which having been married to him for two years and been with him for six years I've never heard him be so quiet which has put the fear of death in me.

Sophie Habboo (Jamie's wife) reflects on Jamie's uncharacteristic quietness recently

Once Jamie reached Hyde Park in London, he was greeted by Sam MacGregor and Danni Diston sporting blonde wigs plus 48 other Laing lookalikes who then joined him for a kilometer of his run. A lovely surprise for Jamie, probably quite a weird sight for anyone who thought they'd have an uneventful morning walk through the park.

The most wholesome part of the day was when Matt Edmondson gave Jamie a bracelet made by Matt's daughter that said 'Go'. What more motivation do you need?

Over halfway through today's ultra marathon, Jamie was getting a bit wobbly on his feet. Physio Nick worked his magic with a quick massage and away Jamie went again!

Things were looking a bit hairy for Jamie as he approached the finish line today, but thankfully Vick & Jerry were on hand to motivate him with some special messages of support.

First was from Vick's mum Ady who wanted to send "lots and lots and lots of bright blessings!"

Then BRITs Rising Star of 2025 Myles Smith dialled in to Radio 1 to send his well wishes to Jamie for his final steps.

And finally came the big one, Kendrick Lamar aka K Dot aka Kung Fu Kenny sent an incredible voicenote just for Jamie. Except we think Vick & Jerry were pulling his leg - as if it hadn't been through enough today.

Have a listen and see for yourself.

What a day! Many highs and many lows. Check in with us from tomorrow morning for more updates from Radio 1's Ultra Marathon Man challenge with Jamie Laing.

Kudos to Keith the cake maker for surprising Jamie as he crossed the finish line with a lovely Victoria sponge cake... in the shape of Jamie's face.

We're intrigued to see how this looks as the feedback on-air was... interesting.

Jamie: "Keith this is amazing, I look a little bit drunk in the eyes if anything... This is a brilliant cake, but also it would do really well in a horror movie... in a good way."

We're going to need to see a picture of this cake ASAP.
