  1. Smiling through gritted teethpublished at 14:08 GMT 18 March 2025

Sam & Danni catch up with Matt Edmondson whilst he's out on the road

    Matt Edmondson
    Radio 1 presenter

When we see him running, at times you see him smiling and then that smile fades away very quickly and it's just a person gritting their teeth through relentless pain. It's like when you've had one blister... and it's all you can think about because that blister's really annoying. Imagine that, but it's the entirety of your body screaming out saying 'stop! stop! stop!'

I think the adrenaline might have worn off now. Before yesterday Jamie hadn't run more than 7 miles and yesterday ran his first marathon, ran his first ultramarathon and now he's got several more ahead of him.

    Radio 1 presenters

The Radio 1 listeners are incredible, I get so emotional during Comic Relief weeks every year, because the way people come together and work together to raise such an incredible amount of money just to keep Jamie going, to keep everyone else going. It's phenomenal actually.

  5. "I feel like I might have bitten off more than I can chew"published at 13:17 GMT 18 March 2025

    Jamie Laing
    Radio 1's Ultra Marathon Man

I'm really struggling if I'm totally honest. It's really tough.

The only way I get through the wall is if I look down the road and I see a sign and think 'I can just get to there'.

Then I get there and I see a tree and I go 'I'm just going to get to that tree'.

I'm just doing it in small stages at the moment.

The thought of getting up and going again is a lot.

I feel like I might have bitten off more than I can chew...

  8. Video just in... watch the moment Matt's scooter gets crushedpublished at 12:27 GMT 18 March 2025

While Jamie was starting his second of five ultra marathons, Greg James set listeners a challenge: Raise more than £75,000 by the end of his show, and Matt Edmondson's beloved scooter - which he rides to work every day - would be crushed.

Listeners love a challenge - watch the video below to see how the action unfolded.

  9. Taking the cakepublished at 12:18 GMT 18 March 2025

In case you missed it, when Jamie finally crossed the finish line in Harpenden yesterday he was greeted with a pleasant surprise - a cake made in the image of his face.

"This is a brilliant cake, but also it would do really well in a horror movie... in a good way" Jamie remarked when presented with the baked offering.

  10. Ultra Marathon weather forecastpublished at 12:08 GMT 18 March 2025

Will the sun keep shining on our Ultra Marathon Man?

As it stands, Jamie's going to be running in glorious sunshine today as he approaches Kettering.

Day three looks slightly sweatier, with temperatures reaching 14c in start destination Market Harborough.

By day four, he'll need to double up on deodorant, because we're dealing with a mini March heatwave in Kegworth.

There's a chance of rain on day five as he approaches Salford, but he'll be so close to the finish line he probably won't mind!

  11. "Humans are amazing"published at 11:59 GMT 18 March 2025

The support Jamie's getting during his challenge is keeping him going.

    Jamie Laing
    Radio 1's Ultra Marathon Man

Sometimes we see the news, and the world can feel a bit down in the dumps - but people are amazing. People are brilliant.

They are kind, and they are considerate, and they are wonderful.

Doing something like this makes you realise that the world and humans are amazing.

  12. Jamie's finding it tough right nowpublished at 11:47 GMT 18 March 2025

    Jamie Laing
    Radio 1's Ultra Marathon Man

Every single part of my body is telling me to give up. I'm just trying to dig deep at the moment to get through this.

When I'm watching the kilmoetres and the miles tick up it feels like they're going backwards. It feels like nothing's moving, I don't feel like I'm moving anywhere.

    Mentally that is pretty tough.

  13. Keep those messages of support for Jamie comingpublished at 11:41 GMT 18 March 2025

My neighbours must think I'm losing the plot here because I've laughed so much this morning. I love listening to Radio 1 and I love the awesome challenges like these. I donated yesterday, I'll donate again today.

Erin, in her garden in sunny Norfolk

I just want to say that after going through a rough time recently and feeling quite down, it's so uplifting to hear what Jamie's doing. The incredible effort he's putting in is so inspiring. The absolute amazing nonsense on the radio this morning has left me with a big smile on my face.

  14. Beautiful day for a runpublished at 11:13 GMT 18 March 2025

In solidarity for Jamie's epic challenge, Radio 1's Melvin Odoom and Charlie Hedges are currently out doing a 1 mile run.

They were asked to sum up the experience in one word: "Cold."

If you're out and about this morning, there's a special Jamie-curated edition of the Pace Setter, bringing together all the songs he listened to while training for his ultra marathons.

I thought it was going to be bad, but it's 100% worse than I thought it was going to be. But the people honking their horns and coming out and donating has been incredible.

Jamie's first day was pretty remarkable - take a look at that moving time (ie. the time spent running), and the amount of calories he burned.

And over 4,000 calories! Think about how long you have to spend on a treadmill, just to burn off a digestive biscuit.

An amazing morning. Great momentum going into day two. He's almost done another half marathon. It's gonna be a long day. And then... well, we don't even wanna think about tomorrow, and the Thursday and then Friday. He's going to need your ears, your donations, your love and support.

  20. Some strong listener reaction to the demise of Matt's scooterpublished at 10:22 GMT 18 March 2025

Everything about this morning is the reason I've been a Radio 1 listener for a long time. From Matt's initial reaction to 'Goodbye My Scooter' playing straight after! It's gold and all for an amazing cause. I donated yesterday and I'm donating again today. Come on Jamie!
