When Phil Spector invented the 'wall of sound', he probably didn't envisage a man riding a unicycle, and brass band playing on top of a bus or a full choir being pulled along by a tractor as they perform.

But that's exactly what's going on along the length of Hadrian's Wall today. With 600 performers stretching between Cumbria and North Tyneside and passing a relay baton (shaped like a musical note) between them.

From string quartets to bluegrass bands and hip-hop artists, most musical tastes are covered for.

Both bizarre and beautiful, the whole event is being covered by BBC Radio - Stuart Maconie is there right now for 6 Music, while Radio Cumbria and Radio Newcastle are hot on the heels of the baton the whole way.

And there's even a live blog.

If you are just joining us, happy BBC Music Day! There's loads happening:

A unique relay of 600 musicians on Hadrian’s Wall of Sound started at 7.00am and will go on until 7.00pm. We also have events in Bristol, Liverpool, Bradford, Plymouth, across Northern Ireland and in Cardiff.

Glasgow hosts a big concert tonight with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Jamie Cullum, while Manic Street Preachers will play to a crowd of 10,000 at Cardiff Castle.

Before that though, BBC Radio 3 and Radio Cymru will join forces to try and break a World Record, bridging more than 7,000 miles to try and set the greatest distance between people singing a duet at 4.30pm.

Get inspired and get involved using #BBCMusicDay

BBC Music Day isn't just about events taking place along Hadrian's Wall, or a potential World Record-breaking 7,000-mile duet between Wales and Patagonia., external

We're also celebrating Unsung Heroes from local communities across the UK.

Five winners, including Denise White, have been selected by a BBC panel after being nominated by members of the public, and will all receive a BBC Music VIP Pass, giving them and their friends tickets to a major BBC Music event of their choice, from the BBC Proms to the BBC Music Awards to the Radio 2 Folk Awards and beyond.

And they really deserve it - click here to find out why.

But they are very deserving. Four have already been announced, and the final winner will be revealed later during Steve Wright in the Afternoon on BBC Radio 2.
