So everyone knows about Conor McGregor. But what about the man he's facing tonight? Well, Eddie Alvarez is no slouch in the cage himself.

The 32-year-old, from Philadelphia, was Bellator’s first lightweight champion, winning the tournament in 2009. He had an absolute barnstormer of a fight in 2011 with Michael Chandler – honestly, track it down on YouTube if you can.

He was originally set to fight for UFC in 2012, but a messy contract dispute meant he had to stay with Bellator until 2014, when he finally made his debut – losing to Donald Cerrone.

After a slow start to his UFC career, he found his momentum and beat Rafael dos Anjos in July to win the lightweight title.

And just to add a touch of Celtic spirit to the bout with McGregor, Alvarez is half-Irish and grew up in a mainly Irish bit of Philly.

He told an interviewer: “I tell everyone all the time they say, ‘What are you’? I say I’m Irish. I’m Puerto Rican I guess I was born to fight.”

Away from the octagon? He’s happily married, to his girlfriend from school, and has four kids. He’s hugely popular in his home town – his neighbours even projected his title win onto a big screen outside their house so the street could watch it.

  4. MAJORITY DRAWpublished at 06:03 GMT 13 November 2016

    Woodley v Thompson

Well, that was a moment and a half.  Two judges scored it 47-47, meaning the 48-47 from the third and final judge was enough for Woodley to retain his title.  But there's confusion as Bruce Buffer initially announces it as a split decision.

The crowd isn't impressed with the decision, and Woodley looks shattered after the reversal of the announcement.  Thompson, on the other hand, is getting huge cheers.

Tyron Woodley may be the one with the belt around his waist but if there is anything fans will remember from tonight's fight, it's Thompson's incredible warrior-esque determination to not give in.

It's a miracle that Wonderboy has withstood so many hits and is still going!

The crowd roar in support as he escapes yet another one of Woodley's choke-holds to end the round on top and as the one who is delivering the punches.

    Spectacular.

  15. Round 4published at 05:50 GMT 13 November 2016

    Woodley v Thompson

The fourth round ends with Thompson not only evading Woodley's guillotine choke, but ending up on top and raining down punches on the champion.  And as the klaxon sounds, the challenger helps Woodley up to his feet.  What a gentleman.

  16. Round 4published at 05:49 GMT 13 November 2016

    Woodley v Thompson

Woodley lands a huge punch that puts Thompson, momentarily, on the deck.  The challenger gets up but before he can do much Woodley lands another punch that puts Thomson back down.  The champion lands a series of punches that has Thompson out on his feet, before trying to get in a tight guillotine.  Somehow, Thompson manages to evade, but Woodley keeps the hold on, bringing him down to the ground.

Incredibly, despite being in a guillotine for the best part of a minute, Thompson not only manages to land punches to his opponent before getting free.  A remarkable escape for the challenger.
