Mature students -
Age
Age
Images of university invariably show groups of young, fresh faced students, perhaps with a token ‘oldie’ in a corner. In this scenario it can be easy to think you’ll be the oldest one or course, or even that your age makes you ‘past it’ in terms of learning. The old adage "you can’t teach and old dog new tricks" is more than disproved by the facts about mature students gaining new skills and qualifications all over the UK.
Most institutions will have a percentage of between 10% and 40% mature students, with some more ‘mature student friendly’ than others. They will also have a mature student’s group or society which can be a good way to mix if you do not meet people within your course or lectures. However, students more often than not find that a mix of ages within a course can make for stimulating debate and conversation - there is no clear divide between old and young students as there will always be common ground. Admittedly it can be daunting, but there will always be someone older than you, and all mature students will be experiencing exactly the same feelings before enrolling on a course. Education is for everyone, regardless of age.
