Fernandez was a suprise semi-finalist at Roland Garros last year, where she beat Elena Dementieva and Kim Clijsters to become the second lowest ranked player to reach that stage.
But her progress since then has been somewhat disappointing - perhaps as a result of inflated expectations.
Her best result this year came in Sarasota where she reached the quarter-finals and she made the third round at Charleston and Amelia Island, both on clay.
With her counter-attacking style, Fernandez' game is tailor-made for clay.
