Having made her WTA debut in 1995, Dechy has continued to improve her ranking ever since.
The Frenchwoman ended 2002 inside the top 20 having reached two semi-finals - the highlight of which was in Scottsdale where she lost only to then world number two Jennifer Capriati.
Her Grand Slam record was consistent - if not brilliant - and she reached the third round at all four events.
She is yet to surpass the third round at her home Grand Slam - and her game is probably better suited to faster courts.
But having won her first WTA title this year, at the Gold Coast, Dechy is enjoying the form of her life.
