An injury to Shane Warne in December 2002, followed by his year-long drug ban soon afterwards, was a godsend for Hogg.
After an international debut in 1996, he had spent six seasons on the sidelines and he was determined to make up for lost time.
He took regular clutches of wickets in the 2002-03 VB Series against England and Sri Lanka and capped it off with a vital unbeaten half-century in the final.
In the World Cup, wickets continued to come his way, though he was less effective in subsequent tours of West Indies and India.
A perfectionist who often demads extra nets and fielding practice, Hogg is a consummate professional and will not give his place in the side back to Warne without a struggle.
